This guy is right. The book shows several lives that are more sad than his, his daughter's, arguably Edith's, her father's, Masters, both the crippled guys, and Sloane. It's only easy to feel bad for him because we're with him for the entire book and grow to like him. If he wasn't the focus, we'd think he's one of the better off characters.
