>Novel starts out with a partial cliche beginning due to the MC circumstance.
>Realize it will never be picked up by a publisher due to the Cliche
>Start to rewrite the beginning so it won't be a cliche.
>Months pass me by as I struggle to find a non-cliche opening that is the crux of the MC problem
>keep deluding myself that I will find it soon enough.

How do I kill myself /lit/? I want this feeling of emptiness inside me to end.

Never knew why cliche make or break novels. Always thought it was the plot and the character in the novel that make and break novels

Cliche are nothing more than an idea or an expression to the reader and nothing more. It's how you use the cliche in your novel that should matter and whether or not the publisher is right to deny you.

Wrong.

What kind of cliche? Maybe it's not as bad as you think. Although if you can't come up with another beginning in months, your ability as a writer seems questionable at best and should worry you must more than the initial problem.

>>10168815
Actually it's voice. Then characters. Then plot. Just when you start with a cliche, it's likely that you've lost the attention of the agent after the first sentences, so it's not like anyone will find out the rest.

>>10169398
The things are cliches BECAUSE of the classical books and general overuse. Reading "It was a cold and rainy night" for the first time isn't too bad. Seeing it hundreds of times in different books is what made it boring.
