I read the first two Dune books. I've heard the third is good and everything is bad after that, especially the stuff written by Herbert's son. Is this true?

Dune is great
Messiah is good
Children is alright
God Emperor is often considered on par with the original (it is)
Heretics and Chapterhouse are meh
Anything other than those 6 are by his son, Brian. I haven't read any of those, but they're universally considered trash.
Imo, if you're going to read the 3rd book, you should definitely check out God Emperor afterward, although I personally consider the 2nd book a good stopping point too.

The advice here so far is spot on. The question is, though, after finishing the second Dune book did you have a strong desire to find out what happens next?

That fact that you're posting this suggests not, in which case it might be best to stop where you're at and appreciate what you've read for what it is.
