What's the equivalent of "start with the Greeks" for short stories? I mean, what is a list of the essential short stories or collections of short stories that one should start with? I realized that ever since I started reading a lot 3 years ago I've mostly read novels, but want to read more short stories now. (Some of the things I've read that you don't need to mention: Kafka's shorts, Dubliners, Borges', Hemingway's, Vonnegut's). I also know pic related is supposed to be good.

Not these. Plays and poems aren't short stories, and Gogol is a genius.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Chaucer's Canterbury Tales
Gulliver's Travels (viewed by many as a novel, although I see it as a collection of 4 short stories. Worth a read.)

Who mentioned Decameron in those posts?

In addition to some of the others mentioned, I recommend:

Ann Beattie
Carver
F'OC
Richard Yates
Turgenev
Alejandro Zambra
Adam Johnson
David Gates

Murakami's recent collection is good as well.
