I'd start with Hajdi Murat from Tolstoy then A Dream of a Ridiculous man (constance translation) from Dosto

The French actually translated Russian literature before Constance Garnett got around to it. A lot of the earliest translations of the Russkis were by the French. You would be surprised how many Russian novels were translated into English based on the French translations. If you're French, just read it in French.
