The Decline and Fall of the Book Cover
https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/the-decline-and-fall-of-the-book-cover

>I was a nerdy sci-fi-reading kid in the seventies. The so-called golden age of book and magazine illustration had died out some decades earlier, with the advent of color photography and improved print reproduction, but superb illustration was still thriving in the marginal niches of pulp and genre covers. Richard Powers, who illustrated the cover of what seemed like every science fiction paperback published in the nineteen-sixties, was influenced by surrealists like Roberto Matta and Yves Tanguy, and painted landscapes where monumental amorphous forms stood like alien architecture or colossal carcasses on indistinct plains. Ian Miller’s covers for Bantam’s editions of Ray Bradbury looked as though they were drawn by a lunatic imprisoned with only a straight edge and a compass—mechanical fantasias of girders and circuitry enclosing grotesque, half-molten faces. This was also a time when the aesthetics of psychedelia were filtering down into children’s pop culture, so that my editions of C. S. Lewis’s Christian allegories and John Christopher’s juvenile science fiction looked as if they were painted by Peter Max, every object seemingly sculpted out of foam. The blowing of minds was an artistic priority.

I'm about 250 pages in, and so far I know there's a reverse holy grail quest that got a lady killed, but turned her spirit into a whirlwind. Also a girl who became a drug addicted whore. I'm quite frankly surprised that a PoV character became as such. Not that it's enjoyable to see, but from a detached view it's impressive the author was able to make a character as such sympathetic.

This current book, kind of. There are D'ivers and Soletaken, which haven't really been elaborated on too well, so I looked it up, and basically D'ivers (notice the plural) are shapeshifters who can turn their one being into many animals, and soletaken turn their one being into one animal. Tolkien's elves weren't vegetarian, the association with bows is because they hunted game in the woods.

Elven vegetarianism is a minor but illustrative example of presentism. In reality they would view the harvesting of wild animals as no different than the harvesting of mushrooms or tree bark, something to be done with a correct degree of respect for nature/Yavanna/forest spirits. However that viewpoint is so alien to unread moderns who associate meat consumption with (probably) factory farming, (maybe) Hindoo taboos, or (comedy option) kashrut, Oy Vey! that "close to nature" gets translated into "they don't eat meat".

I think Dark Tower just goes batshit crazy at some point with weirdo references to other literature and pop culture and it even has Stephen King as himself in the books at some point, its just crazyness.

So yeah, accurate cover.

Hey guys, figured I'd post this here. Been trying to find the names of some books I read when I was younger for quite some time now. Some of which are scifi.

1.) Vampire book. Read this book in 7th grade so the details might be fuzzy but it was about a vampire living in England(?) who didn't know he was a vampire until he turned 18. His mother was one but didn't tell him for reasons I don't remember. After he finds out he is, she introduces him to some vampire group that try and get him to join in killings and such (could be wrong on this). He disagrees with them and runs away to New York and they kill his mom or something. The vampire head chases after him. Pretty sure it was new york because I do remember Hells Kitchen oddly enough. The book then ends with his girlfriend becoming a vampire too and both running away I think. Anyone know the name? I'm pretty it was directed for children although I could be wrong.

I could be wrong on some details, but any help would be appreciated. Also, I don't come to /lit/ much but is it okay to ask for help on remembering old books here? Not all the books I'm trying to remember are scifi so I was wondering if it was okay to make threads asking for help on remembering the name of books.

that sounds maddeningly familiar actually, but I can't place it. Also I assume it's not against the rules to start a thread on that subject, I would confine it to one "anons post books they're trying to remember, others name them" thread instead of a different thread for each book

Another book, this one a children's story I'm sure.

I read the third part of a trilogy cause I couldn't find the first two books. This book was about an alien species that had a head that looked like a bicycle helmet. They had conquered earth and at the time of the third book the MC was living underground for years after becoming trapped. He was living with some new intelligent species underground I think. He finally escapes and by accident stares at the sun on his way out and becomes completely blind. There was also another water like species that had been interbreeding with the remnants of humanity. MC joins a rebellion made of humans, the water species, and their mixed offspring to fight off the alien species. They succeed and at the end he meets up with his girlfriend who had been captured and tortured by the alien species years ago. That's all I remember.

Aldoux Huxley's Brave New World, Walter Tevis' The Man Who Fell To Earth, and Mockingbird

Not SF but there's a lengthy part of Dostoevsky's Notes From Underground on this topic. Here, utopia isn't achievable because it assumes that man will act in his best interests; man has free well, including a will to act spitefully and destructively against his own interests; and man wouldn't be happy if he could just live comfortably and eat cake. Walter Tevis Mockingbird, in articular, is written along these lines. He depicts a future where automation has created comfortable lives and instant gratification, where robots govern and work for us, but people become sloth, illiterate and unhappy.

>Before the Dwarves of Nogrod and Belegost came west over the mountains the Elves of Beleriand knew not what these others were, and they hunted them, and slew them; but afterwards they let them alone, and they were called Noegyth Nibin, the Petty-Dwarves, in the Sindarin tongue.
They weren't exactly the model naugrim you read about learning from the noldor or like those that fought glaurung, they're described as only caring for themselves and distrusting others but its strange how the elves went out of their way to hunt them.

Tolkien's elves are definitely not all vegetarian, hunting is a major pastime of theirs and is not treated as wrong or bad at all. There are words for "vegetarian" in some vocab lists, and the green-elves of Ossiriand in the first age did not kill living things, but the mere fact that Tolkien mentions this shows that it was not usual for elves. From The Hobbit, when the dwarves stumble upon the elves feasting in the wood:

>There was a fire in their midst and there were torches fastened to some of the trees round about; but most splendid sight of all: they were eating and drinking and laughing merrily. The smell of the roast meats was so enchanting...

Canon is a breathtakingly retarded concept with respect to almost anything, but especially with respect to Tolkien who kept revising and reworking his conceptions in a wide variety of published and unpublished texts through almost the whole of his adult life. But what that passage tells us, together with many others that describe elves hunting and, for example, the fact that the elves of Lorien use skin blankets when sleeping in winter, strongly suggests that Tolkien conceived them as killing animals and using animal products, and if they did this, why would they let the meat go to waste?

Hence my biologically herbivorous theory :^) they can't digest animal protein but still use animal parts (skin, sinew, bone) and hunt for sport because they don't have any spiritual connection to nature nonsense. They could also export smoked/salted meat to, say, dwarves and hobbits and dalemen even if they can't eat it themselves.

They may or may not be able to consume dairy, perhaps becoming lactose intolerant after infancy. A plant-based diet from birth might also go some of the way to explaining their slender builds and often feminine features.

All that said, at least one instance of some elves in Tolkien's setting eating meat was cited here >>10127053
but I think the above is still a worthwhile middle ground between being hippies or cannibals, for elves in general, independent of Tolkien.

While I can see where you are coming from, I think
>slender builds and often feminine features
is reading into Tolkien ideas that stem from Tolkien imitators and general fantasy cliche rather than the man himself. Male elves are often described in terms of their beauty in Tolkien, but not in terms of having a feminine beauty -- you have to think of it more in terms of the aristeia of form, the faintly homoerotic masculine perfection that one finds in antique myth. Or for that matter in The Worm Ouroboros since that's from the same kind of mindset in some ways (though very different in others), guys like Juss and Gro are written up as super beautiful and written about in some times rather gushing terms (take a shot for every honor paid to Gro's eyes) but their beauty is clearly contrasted to the beauty of Brandoch Daga, which is portrayed in a way that makes it clear he appears effeminate and even foppish despite his rock-solid throbbing masculinity.

As for the slender build, I think that is people reading too much into the appearance of Legolas, who is indeed slender. Many of the light elves seem to have been very tall (Thingol and Turgon are both over 7, and possibly over 8 feet in height) but there's nothing to indicate that they were particularly thin proportionally. And in general they are described as being stronger and faster than men, which doesn't really support a low-protein or meatless diet in my eyes. The most important elvish foodstuff was bread (Tolkien wrote quite a bit about the importance of baking and deciding who gets the bread as a social role of elven-ladies in particular) and obviously it would be out of character for them to kill animals in excess of their needs, but I think the texts clearly support a meat-inclusive diet for them.

This was decent entertainment from Moorcock and Elric, the second novel chronologically, but published nearly two decades after Elric Of Melnibone. Compared to the first book this is a more conventional adventure plot, a macguffin to be retrieved from dangerous lands, and a damsel in distress. Elric's grim demeanor is softened by a romantic interest side character, whereby he appears less aloof and more human. This is also largely a travelogue through seven dream realms so there is a lot of surreal and images and whimsy, and considerable crossover with wider Moorcock stories (which I detected without having read Jerry Cornelius) The tone overall is more oriental, adventurous, and less grimdark than previously, and Moorcock's interest remains in proud and fading empires, justice, fate, willpower, chaos and law. For all of this there is still a lot of entertaining action sequences and escapism but nothing unique. It's a 3/5 book, quickly readable over a weekend.

Did cyberpunk ruin the visionary trait of science fiction? It moved SF away from fantastic vistas and concepts and even 'hard' science and into postmodern crap like psychology, ontology, epistemology and even fucking noir.

Hear me out. What's the point of reading science fiction if there's gonna be drones, robots, rockets, cell phones, "network", AI? Shouldn't it deal with something that's unconceivable yet enticing?

At some point, all the low-hanging fruit will be picked, in terms of interesting concepts. I suspect that we are in that time. Perhaps we simply need more history to pass to give us a better idea of what could be coming.

It was shit. I tried to read it to get a hold of Hindu mythology, but the author is inexperienced, has a poor grasp of the English language , and lubes up and rides all the gods' dicks in this novel hard.

If it wasn't written with such crude English (i think in the attempt of it being accessible to children) it would have been a great book. I finished it but didn't continue the series.

How persons traveled, the advances in medicine, etc, all would have been digested better if it wasn't for his bullshit prose. He should have written it in Hindi and found an excellent translator to work on it. I'm 50% certain it would have come out better than this.

Exactly the right amount of humor, the characters are well written and everyone, even minor characters, have their own personalities and identifying traits. Hindu shit was always like that. Piss easy explanations with no depth as to assuage confusion.
I grew up in w multicultural country where the 3 major religions are Islam, Hinduism and Christianity. The hindu cartoons i saw as a kid was horribly written. But seeing as most Hindus aren't well educated it makes sense when they have to convey thoughts as convoluted and complex as religion.

Read the bhagavad gita, and watch old hindi cartoons with hannoman and the other animal headed gods and their high-jinx. Look for works with kali, etc. The series above would probably explain a lot, but it depends on your threshold for shitty awfully written prose.

>Also pro tip from someone who grew up among hindus. You can't really convert into their religion. Unlike Christianity and Islam, there is no conversion for Hinduism. You are born into it, and "baptised" by the pandit.
There are certainly places I can't go, like Sri Jagannatha Mandir, and organizations I can't join, like the Yoga-Vedanta Forest Academy, but I am specifically interested in Saiva Siddhanta, of which I am informed there are many white as well as Indian adherents. "Conversion" may not be the right word. I just want to go to a temple on a regular basis, show respect to Lord Shiva, and do bhakti. I don't care if other people recognize me as "a Hindu" or not.

I was reading up on Cunning Folk, which were basically folk magicians and healers that people often turned to for help in medieval and early modern England, and as I started reading about "hedge riding," which basically refers to crossing into the spirit world, and general psychopomp stuff, I came across Orphism, a Greek mystery religion focused on Dionysus. I found out that it was probably influenced by Hindu thought, and that some people had drawn parallel between Orphism and some forms of Shaivism. Out of curiosity, I started reading a book of devotional poetry about Shiva, looking up terms I didn't know, and I got to one called "To the Mahadeva It Knows" and I felt weird. Small, but for the first time I can remember, not insecure or worthless. As I read more about Siva Siddhanta, I realized a lot of it matched up with much of how I understand the world already. In fact, one of only two dreams I've ever had that I can remember vividly involved the idea of God as a dancer.

I know this might all sound "fluffy" or childish, but I was depressed and dealing with anxiety for years and through therapy and working on myself, I got quite a bit better, but I hit a plateau at a level still significantly below what I would consider "healthy." For the first time, as I pursue this, I'm improving once more.

By the way, I looked, and someone put the poem online here:

http://parkothkshethrampayyantemplearoli.blogspot.com/2016/01/to-mahadeva-it-knows_14.html

Alright /sffg/, this might be kind of a weird one, but hopefully you catch my drift.

I want a fantasy novel in the spirit of HBO's Rome series. Not necessarily a Roman-inspired fantasy series, but a novel that handles worldbuilding and values dissonance in a similar way.

In particular: 1) it doesn't give a single fuck about making the reader uncomfortable/triggered with how it's world is portrayed, 2) the world isn't 'America except with knights and dragons', and 3) doesn't ever beat you over the head with info about the world.

Just finished pic related, I really like how this series is written, with aliens being unique bun not completely sliding into planet of hats, and the whole one ship against the universe gig, so many books do shamelessly and without putting any effort into it, being well justified for once.

I really recommend it if you are looking for something to read, it's not particularly hard, but neither is it soft, it respects it characters , develops and if it decides to kill one it always feels right to me., something so many sci-fi series utterly fail at.

Ah yes, the prose. The prooooooose. the PROOOOOOOSE. There's a reason why the pseuds on this website are always so willing to talk about "the prose" of a book when discussing its merits or flaws. Why attempt to analyze the merits and effects of the literary devices used to add to the development of characters, why attempt to understand the interplay of the perspectives of different characters and the emphasis this places on different themes, the spectrum of ironies used throughout the novel, the historical significance of the novel and the influence it has spawned in literary tradition or the influences seen throughout the work, the specific structure and literary underpinnings of the novel and the way it influences the tone, the author's relationship to the characters and the theme, the presentation of the novel itself to the audience and thus the relationship between reader and text --- why do any of this, when you could talk about "the prose?" You know that you have such a deep understanding of the book, don't you, when you talk about "the prose," the "musicality of it," the "sparseness." What a great artistic touch you have, don't you! Such a highly refined poetic sense! And you feel like such a true reader of literature when you are able to compare these styles: "I am partial to the lyricism of Joyce's prose, as well as the clean and scientific prose of Borges," you might say. What a deep understanding you show! Because the "prose" of a work is such an accessible topic, something that is felt immediately in the body and senses, a nice little sensation and flutter of the heart. Art obviously has nothing else to it, nothing other than the little sensations that I experience, because why should i attempt to understand it on a deeper level than this, when I have such a "refined" sense of the "prose?" Why even attempt to analyze the prose and the poetic and rhythmical underpinnings of it, when I could use a pretty little metaphor for it? It matters little that virtually every reader of literature has access to the music of the words and so my understanding is not quite so advanced as I would think, that form is something that goes hand in hand with theme, that I missed all the deep relationships between characters and between text and reader that existed in the work and that comprise a large part of the literary merit of the text, for my understanding of "the prose" shows such a mastery of language, a fine-tuned sense of the magical flow of the words! Having understood this work, I may as well move onto the next, the next bundle of pretty sensations to experience, the next bagful of fun linguistic treats!

The wall is difficult for free magic beings to cross because it has charter marks designed to prevent that.

I can't remember if there is an in-universe justification of why magic only works on one side but it might be to do with charter stones or the wall itself.

If you read all 5 books, and you're not a brainlet, i.e, can think beyond what the author says, you will find out why. It's explained in the books, but I'm not spoonfeeding anyone.

If he actually cared about the book being badly written he would have asked about how it handled characterization, inconsistencies and plot holes it has, whether or not it manages to convey a theme properly. You know, things that actually matter regarding the content of the book. Asking about the prose when somebody tells you a book is bad is like somebody warning you not to buy a house and then you ask if it's because it has an odd number of steps leading to the second floor instead of an even number.
