Is there any actual reason to use the phrase "diametrically opposed"? Why not just say "opposed"?

Why not just say "opposed"?

Everytime I hear the word "diametrically" it is followed by "opposed" 100% of the time. And 100% of the time, it's coming from the mouth of someone who thinks they are making a damning polemic, but is actually just shrill.
