Either they held some hope to publish it before deciding not to for whatever reason, or they just don't have their shit together. It's still just polite to let authors know so they can send their work elsewhere.

I'm still waiting to hear about three stories I sent recently, but one place say they always take at least four months before giving any answer, and I'm pretty sure the other place simply never contacts authors they don't chose. They were pretty weird stories, so I don't hold much hope they'll accept them, but whatever.

Thanks, mate. It's actually not a single story; it's a short story collection instead. I've gotten a few of the stories in the collection published, but not all. I've also sent it to a small press I really like, and I have yet to hear back from them. So we'll see. Good luck to you too.
