Does it get any better? I was expecting recollection of childhood memories, but not just memories, but of that part of ourselves that is lost in childhood, the feeling of "this is what life is meant to be" when thinking deeply about childhood memories, etc. I'm 80 pages in. Does it get better or am I simply not getting it?

It is an overrated book pseuds commonly name drop to look impressive because Proust was French and gay and wrote the longest novel ever so of course this will make me look patrician etc

and no, the second half is weaker than the first half because Proust died before finishing it

Proust's magnum opus is one of the final bosses of literature. It isn't an easy read and requires you retain memory of a gazillion characters. That said, the prose is god-tier. Keep fighting through it, he rewards you.

not every chapter is good, but you need to read it all the first time

>Proust was French
Proust was a jew, but I agree with the rest of your statement. Proust is enormously overrated.

If you mean "does it change much" then no. You get the gist of Proust pretty quickly - 80 pages is enough. If you want more, keep going, if you don't, read something else.

imo Proust isn't quite as good as he's cracked up to be but he's worth reading for the sheer exercise in absorbing so many 40 line 25 clause Gallic sentences that never collapse into incomprehensibility. Trains ur mind to think bigga & longa

The Swann in Love section is absolutely fantastic.

Hey, there you are, was wondering where you'd been. Those Cohen and Bellow threads as lonely without you, you know

Didn't some Croation woman write a longer book but it has yet to be translated?

Oh apparently the longest novel is Men of Goodwill by Jules Romains (|Some Frog I've never heard of)
But I was thinking of Gordana by Marija Jurić Zagorka which is also longer than In search of lost Time.

>Proust was technically a Jew (Jewish mother) but raised a Catholic
>He later became an atheist, but argued against separation of church and state, believing socialism to be a threat to society and the Catholic church necessary to its survival
>He was a gay, yet fought a duel with a guy for besmirching his honour by calling him gay
>Also a neckbeard shutin who didn't move out of his parents house until they were both dead

Sounds like /ourguy/ ngl
