Bely was a Russian author that many liken to Joyce for the complexity of the language in his books (unfortuantely much of this is lost in translation but it's still worth a read). He was really into the occult and anthroposphy. Pretty eccentric dude. Petersburg is his masterpiece and in my opinion the best work in Russian lit. Also he looked like Borat.

Best Russian writer? I doubt, but I will give it a try.Nabokov considered this novel of the four best of the 20th century.
He looks a lot like Borat, that's a good thing.
