It seems like the Oscar Bait of literature and a sad example of why contemporary literature is in the shitter. It's just a multicultural group of fags fagging it up in New York City for a thousand pages so of course critics toss awards at it.

Not him but:
It is not well written, the stories are flat, and its way too long

However, credit where credit is due. Yanigahara does two things well. She builds likeable characters, and tortures them to death over decades. The NYC location and suffering as reader bait reminds me of American Psycho in many ways, except written to be consumed by middlebrow women. I would not call this middlebrow however, it is too fucked up.

in this case this criticism is extremely on point. It is bizarre and jarring to see men dealing with emotional travails as a woman would. Even though these guys are all sorta gay, at some point they would all be sitting around getting drunk telling Jude to suck it up.
