Why does /lit/ dislike him so much?

Because his most popular works are all quintessentially redditcore - Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, And A Scanner Darkly most prominently.

I've seen some good discussions of VALIS on here however, so it wouldn't be fair to say /lit/ "hates" him.

One hot summer like this one, I turned 21 and became schizophrenic. When the clock struck midnight. I was just out getting a drink and suddenly I experienced gnosis. Might have been the acid too. I had never read ancient greek but suddenly I understood it. I intimately understood myself as a roman citizen in the black iron prison. I cried out for Christ. And the spirit descended upon me. Supposedly in hinduism the downward movement of the kundalini is more dangerous. That would explain a lot. Nevertheless, I met the lady philosophy, fell in love with the shekinah, and understood my tragically beautiful fate in the grand tapestry of being and becoming. 2012 was coming and fueled eschatological fears. People started comparing me to Terrence McKenna. I had read Do Androids Dream... and A Scanner Darkly but not delved into his gnostic works. I found VALIS at half price. Reading it was a painful metamorphosis. I was hospitalized. I read the divine invasion and timothy archer soon after while in recovery. Some curious synchronicties. I feel sometimes as if I was PKD in a past life. I stayed on meds and somehow my deleuzeans were able to best my delusions. But once stable, there was a still hole missing. In the end it was plato and aristotle and buddha and laozi who really set me straight.

They don't hate him, it's just a few loud idiots. I've had very nice conversations on PKD here a few times and lot of people on here respect him. I think he may be the only sci-fi/ostensibly genre-fic author on /lit/ that people can talk pretty chill about without criticizing him as not being literary enough or referring one to SFFG threads. He's a writer of astonishingly interesting ideas, not so much about style but definitely had an extraordinary creative capacity.

I read VALIS and it kind of shocked me
When I was 17 I tried some psychedelic RC and I'm pretty sure I went schizo for a month. I legit thought reallity was some fake thing, this sounds like baby's first solipsism but the level of anxiety and complete detachment from reality was killing me. When I didn't feel like this I just felt completly numb, like a stone. I got over this pretty quickly after I stole a benzo from my mom and was able to think without anxiety disturbing everything. When reading VALIS the same feels started creeping up. I don't if PKD really experienced all the crazy shit he describes in there, but if thats the case I'm amazed at the fact that he was funcional enough to write it down.
I keep doing psychedelics after all that, lol.

Is the Divine invasion good?

Characters are paper thin. His good story elements are never satisfyingly drawn out. His books are perfect for adaption to screen plays

His books were very different for the time. Great authors are never pigeon holed as just sci fi writers. Most sci-fi writers are terrible, he was the tallest midget
