How come I have never seen /lit/ discuss this modern masterpiece? It succeeds in subverting the norms and expectations of the novel in ways unseen since Joyce's later works.

It's really mediocre, or so I've heard.

It's actually very good indeed. Give it a chance, you won't regret it.

mostly it's so fucking long that it falls into Ulysses territory where most people just act like they've read it instead of actually doing so. I'd say the multiple narratives and structure of the novel definitely succeed in being readable where Joyce failed in Finnegans Wake. It ultimately has a pretty shallow plot device, which I think is why its' overlooked, but it's definitely an achievement in book design.

to be honest I think this book is a failure. a lot of it seems like the author "pushing the structure" of the novel but it's really just gimmicks that weren't possible on a large scale until we wrote books on computers. the main storyline (not the house, the frame story with johhny) is so boring

It has a couple of panic inducing scenes but I'd say not worth the time

back in 2015 we had one thread a week on it.

it's not really that long, I was able to read it in a week and I'm a pretty slow reader. That said, there are some aspects of the novel that are enjoyable (the horror elements/inside of the house) but outside of those aspects the novel is kinda just alright and nothing more.
