A Frost Of Fear And Fortitude, written by A.P Beswick
https://youtu.be/UUf0yUf1Rlo?si=IEHQTvqWpYIHY8sv
The gimmick of the series/setting is dark fantasy re-imaginings of classic tales and legedes.
This one being very clearly inspired by mixing The Witcher with the story of Santa.
It's decent and not very long.

I mean there are basically all of the gothic classics from the Victorian period that aren't about vampires.

The Fall of the House of Usher
The Signal-Man
The Shadow in the Corner
The Picture of Dorian Gray
The Yellow Wallpaper
The Willows

Try some of those.
They are all good and all quite gothic.

Why would I divulge in "worldbuilding" when there is already a world with everything I need for sorrow and horror and glee and wonder in it? Divulge means to make bare what was once concealed:
>Divulge was borrowed into Middle English in the 15th century from Latin divulgare, a word that combines the prefix dis-, meaning "apart" or "in different directions," with vulgare, meaning "to make known." Vulgare, in turn, derives from the Latin noun vulgus, meaning "mob" or "common people."

I don't want to start a new thread for a one-off question and this seems like the least unrelated place to ask. There's a story I remember from a mythology, but can't for the life of me remember which one and who it was about. The premise was that a god plucked his own eye and turned it into a man, who then travelled around the world to gather wisdom from all the lands. I first thought it was Horus, but apparently Eye of Wadjet is something else. Any ideas?

I somehow pushed through TTH and I think I'm done with Malazan. Contrary to what you will read on the web, the series goes down the shitter halfway through. After Midnight Tides 90% of the content is pointless overly descriptive filler, and with each subsequent book it gets only worse and worse. Basically, it becomes your standard run-of-the-mill fantasy dreck (like most other series mentioned here). A shame because books 2-5 are pretty great.

>Neuromancer = Decent cyberspunk i'm putting together a team novel
>Hyperion = Interplanetary high tech trooning

>Between Two Fires = Heaven Vs hell but in medievil FRANCE!
>Mother of Learning = Time loop and like all of the subgenre goes literally nowhere over and over again, has a decent if average magic system and a main characters sister that is annoying as fuck.
>Cradle = Every second novel is a dud in the series with a birdbath of a main character. Only decent thing is the fights that get stale real quick because it does not take long to realize they are all ill conceived magical games of uno.
>I Shall Seal the Heavens = Proto xianxia at its worst, MC gets kidnapped into strong but lowly down on its luck sect. Queue haughty young masters, saving face and swilling ginseng infused tiger penis soup by the gallon.
>A Song of Ice and Fire = Fantastical medieval degeneracy where the caracters who should live die and the characters who should die live. Also author is too busy getting fat and old to finish the series.

>Azarinth Healer = Starts good but fizzles hard midway. Author also makes the main character a low key lesbian because they clearly have no idea hat to do with their love life.
>Primal Hunter = MC+background is so impossibly nonsensical that he's not even cannon in his own setting.
>He Who Fights with Monsters = every character that isnt the MC is just there to be amazed at how smart Jason is while he tells them shit they already know before reminding them (incorrectly i might add) that 'Oh you have no idea".
>Dungeon Crawler Carl = The MC's sidekick (A cat named 'Princess Donut') is so much smarter than Carl (the MC) that every scene the two are in is eye-gougingly painful. This would not be so much of a problem if such scenes did not constitute the majority of the series.
>System Universe = After the initial premise is established it turns into how to pander to followers at a snails pace AKA; 'Filler McFiller Face - The Excessively Extended Sleep Inducing Saga'.
>Dissonance = MC gets god fucked more then once as he goes about becoming a man/bear/goat/pig/axolotl hybrid who also has many super sekret identities.
>Defiance of the Fall = Brain dead MC with very-much-just-barely opposed kingdom building with a wafer thin cultivation system
>Iron Prince = edgy school setting with even edgier MC who has lightning powers and no discernible challenges what so ever.

>Once a man and a woman get to know each other deeply, the woman begins to interfere with the man's behavior, and they no longer enjoy seeing each other, so the man begins to feel that he is not what he used to be, and his sweet feelings cool down.
>The woman often complains about the man's attitude, and naturally there will be talk of separation or divorce, which was unimaginable in the beginning. But Wakamurasaki has no such worries. She is an innocent little girl who has yet to experience the intimacy of a man and a woman, and is therefore an absolutely adorable living doll.

Let's leave this in 2023.

I am halfway through 'Thin Air' by Richard K Morgan. I've never read him before. The beginning was a bit confusing, lots of new terms and stuff, I felt like I should have read a book or two before this in the universe to catch up but eventually it gets explained piece by piece in a pretty natural way.

The combat is actually pretty cool (I still don't care about combat).

The sex scenes are pretty dang good, a nice treat about halfway in the book there's been two in the last 100 pages.

The world building is nice, I like all the characters and the environment. It's a GOOD cyberpunk world. Really feels like it's taking itself serious as a novel in that way.

Also it gives me halo vibes with master chief cause the MC, Veil, has an AI in his head and is augmented up the wazoo. So um, yeah he's fucking sick.

Putting it in best of the best might be a little undeserved, I have yet to read Moon Witch but if it delivers and he pulls of a good conclusion with the third book it'll deserve it, but it's the best fantasy newer than Bakker I could think of.
The first quarter or so about Trackers childhood in swamp slums is so alien and impenetrable I almost put it down, but as he becomes a teenager it starts to click into place and once the adventure started it becomes a hell of a ride with a ton of variety and originality. Writing is great. And it's surprisingly pulp. Like all the best fantasy it's sort of like the author put everything he loves into one big blender, high culture and low. The Spider-Man homage was especially goofy and delightful.

They're the same thing, the difference is more in their protagonist.
Xianxia translates to "Immortal Hero(es)" in english, the defining factor of Xianxia is specifically that the protagonist is seeking advancement at least in part to become Immortal. This is why Xianxia protagonists are usually amoral at best, because Immortality is inherently wrong in most eastern philosophy and religion. It's not evil so much, but rather it's like alcoholism or being a coomer, it's self destructive, and failing to curtail the desire will block you from achieving Enlightenment and until you accept death you will forever be trapped in the cycle of Samsara.

Wuxia is more like Heroic fantasy, it's the same stuff, but defined more by a protagonist with noble goals who isn't seeking to become an immortal demigod, he might seek advancement, even advancement to a higher plane, but the goal is not to defeat death and defy the heavens, although that may happen as a consequence. In short, the Xianxia protagonist is the villain of the Wuxia protagonists story.
Xianxia and Wuxia aren't really separate genres, they're descriptions of the content, in the same way dark fantasy, high fantasy, and heroic fantasy are all fantasy.

Xianxia is basically power fantasy, usually a lot more fantastical than other eastern genres. The plots are usually one note, and unless you are the kind of autist who gets excited by ideas like "battling using universes" it gets tiring once you have read a few stories of the genre. Characters are basically mortals ascending to godhood through cultivation after a point.

Wuxia is the tradional fantasy of china, much more varied in themes and characters, with a much bigger audience than the autistic reader base of xianxia. Books in this genre are generally more down to earth and involve character drama more than just muh power, despite the focus on martial arts at times borderline magic

Just caught up with this
https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/28806/the-flower-that-bloomed-nowhere
I would recommend it. Though be warned that it takes a long ass time to get going and the "murder mystery" the book is supposedly about isn't entirely solved, even though it is (it's very complicated), even at the latest chapter though I feel like I've got a handle on the big picture now
There's a lot useless dialogue and unappealing elements especially in the beginning, the author should really tidy it up, but it's well worth it if you're into mystery and figuring shit out, and you'll need to do that with basically everything in this novel (or just enjoy the ride), the setting, plot, characters, the MC especially. At first I hated her and how weak she seemed but now she has to be one of my favourite things about the whole book and what she's going and has gone through is a large part of if it

More Chinese SF is translated into English than any other language other than Japanese, depending on how inclusive you're feeling about manga and light novels being SF. No, it wouldn't be, and I never said it. I said it depends on the individual. Maybe someone is influenced by reading the short fiction that Clarkesworld published. Certainly a lot were influenced by Obama's endorsement of Three Body Problem, which has both a Chinese and Netflix adaptation. There's the game Genshin Impact, though I don't how much that influences thought about China. Tencent has a lot of influence, if only through their games such as Fortnite and League of Legends. Their near majority ownership of Epic influences a lot considering how popular Unreal Engine is. But again, I can't say how much that influences. Chinese movies are doing better, and not just the ones from Hong Kong. There's Chinese anime, though I don't think there's been anything notable yet. Manhua has been going on longer. Chinese TV not so much. Then there's TikTok. Chinese retailers such as Shein and Temu have been trying to gain a foothold, but don't seem to have been successful.

As for SF specifically, you can find official statements of government funding in the 13th and 14th 5 year plans as well as the Beijing Science Initiative. Though the overall purpose of it is to inspire people to have technological breakthroughs by providing education in many cases. It's very practical. Obviously the webnovels aren't like this and don't receive funding.

I think you want to be arguing against someone I'm not. I'm not arguing about how influential it is overall. All I'm saying is that it exists and it isn't nothing.

As a note, I assume you mean Jemisin, which was three Hugos. Obviously that only has any influence among those who feel the awards ought to be an influence.

I don't think it is, I think it's a small group of people who spam it constantly. These threads don't have that many people in them, and most of the unique IPs here only post once or twice, so the vast majority of posts come from a fairly small group of people.

If you've been on this site awhile you start to realize how a single autistic person can come to dominate a community of a few hundred people simply through determined anonymous spamming and shitposting. They create the illusion of consensus, so that everybody eventually just tolerates it. This works on boards like /lit/ which have crappy / no moderation.
