J. Peterson's first idea against 'cultural marxists' was to create a national government-enforced catalogue of professors and their syllabus that would be constantly monitored for 'Marxist activity.' The man is upset the government is turning towards a surveillance state predicated on emotional gut-responses and so he has an emotional gut-response to suggest state-sponsored surveillance on academia. He's intelligent in the field of negative-reinforcement Jungian psychology but in terms of religion, Western canon, history, political discourse, etc.. He's an absolute hack who researches like a first year undergraduate student. I guarantee you Peterson's academic inquiries stop and end at him plugging in buzzwords into JSTOR and then quoting the first academic article that agrees with him.

Both of his series of lectures are great. Maps of Meaning is also a good book expanding on jugian psychology.

Adding to this: Peterson seems to align almost entirely with Sowell's conception of modern capitalist practice, which is to say it's practically antiquarian at this point. The issue with Sowell's broad take on how capitalism functions in North America is predicated on the idea we all share a similar moral compass or have the same foundational pillars to our morals and ethics as our neighbours do. For the likes of Sowell and Peterson, corruption in an economic system is a sign of moral decay and not an actual function of real-time markets adjusting its variables to maintain the flow of goods and services. For social conservatives, they see capitalism as a mechanism that is eroding morals and ethics. For fiscal conservatives, they see the moral decay and ethical decline of the West as separate from capitalism's function. Neither Sowell, Or Peterson, even entertain the notion that an economic system and a society's moral and ethical boundaries intersect and can influence one another. The only times they do acknowledge this is to say that capitalism provides a positive, beneficial blueprint to a moral and ethical way of life in a manner which is totally detached from its practical application. He's also hypocritical far beyond the average human being. Peterson's household cleared $1.5 million per annum long before he was ever internet famous. He lives in a 3 story manor in the most coveted neighbourhood in Toronto, but still sells little 2x2 carpets based on his ridiculous cover-page of Maps of Meaning for $3500 a pop. He set up a Patreon so the very same low-income, low-self-esteem, meandering and wandering legions of young men Peterson states he wants to assist can provide him an additional $700,000 a year atop of his million-plus dollar incomes and purchase his $3500 bathroom carpets.

I would also consider pausing and wondering if it's really a good idea to gain your moral and ethical grounding from a guy who tells you to wash your penis and clean your room and treat your body right, and proceeds to smell like a Sasquatch covered in stale Stetson cologne whose office is a fucking mess. When his health, caused by his own addictions, finally caught up to him he proceeded to fly to Russia in order to go into a medical-induced coma to beat his Benzos addiction and rehydrate his body with essential vitamins after using patreon bucks to live solely off of Wagyu steaks. This coming from the same person who tells you to confront your problems consciously, head on, enduring whatever punishment comes your way.

a professional does need to, and in fact often don't, follow their own advice when it comes to health, mental health in particular
that's why it's not extraordinary to find medical doctors with self-provoked health issues (overly fat, regular smoking, use of drugs), or with mental health practicioners - in my personal experience I've encountered that many female psychologists are batshit crazy themselves, even the ones who are superb professionals

He fails to take his own advice in many ways, that doesn't make his less valuable. In fact, I think he'd be far better off today had he followed many of the things he taught in lectures.

Then we have the second tier, that comprises people like Aristotle, whose definition of truth, while next to useless, really, is at least concise enough to be memorable: "To say of what is that it is not, or of what is not that it is, is false, while to say of what is that it is, and of what is not that it is not, is true". This is merely common sense transcribed in a kind of formula that makes autistic people feel they've understood something, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if Aristotle was on the spectrum somewhere. All "analytic philosophers" are in the same boat/spectrum, and all their writings are equally commonsensical and worthless. But if the universe functioned commonsensically, why would we need geniuses lol? So these people are superior to the base crowd-pleasers like Peterson because they at least make a concentrated attempt at grappling with the big issues, and the results are at least readable, if not exactly useful. Their main use, however, is to function as foils for the geniuses; to serve up the balls that the geniuses will hit out of the park, so to speak.

And finally, on the first tier, we have the bona fide geniuses. Consider Nietzsche's "Truth is will to power". Doesn't it make Peterson's 20-hour verbal diarrhea on the subject seem ludicrous? Even more so considering the latter comes a whole friggin century after Nietzsche, and Peterson has read him? Not to mention the analytic autists, who still pathetically try to pretend that Nietzsche never existed.

And there you have the three tiers of thinkers. In summa, barely a few dozen people in the history of the species deserve to be carefully read from start to finish, and you won't find any of them on YouTube.

Yes, in the field of Psychology. I do not go to Neil DeGrasse Tyson to learn about the post-revolutionary period of France, I go to John Merriman- a guy who lived in, spoke of, and wrote about France for fifty years. I don't go to Red Fox or Richard Pryor to learn about the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Peterson regrets not being more interdisciplinary in his academic career and so he goes out into public to wax about things he has no idea about with an authoritative demeanour for the purposes of aggrandizing himself. If he focused on the moral and ethical decay in the West from a psychological framework, my ears might be more perked up. Instead he wants to use his platform to talk about the same 2-3 Solzhenitsyn books he really liked in college while being completely and utterly ignorant of Western history.
