Can we talk about this? I just finished it today. I feel like there was a tremendous degree of pandering, and very little subtlety. If nobody knew that the author is a black women then it wouldn't be praised this much. I don't want to /pol/ it up at all, but seriously, there's no way this book deserves all the praise it's getting. It's at best a fairly mediocre fantasy story with a few somewhat interesting ideas.

That is not true. You need to read something other than Dune.

What does that have to with his writing? You could have at least mentioned how he came up with the idea of positron brains.

>Heinlein is a misogynistic homosexual cuck that touch himself thinking about his mum.
You also forgot being perpetually butthurt for missing out on WW2 on account of illness. And being a squid. All which gave flavor to his writing.

As a Baen man, I don't know who makes their covers, but I envy their steady job.

That said, I started reading Dangerous Visions this week, and I have been blown out. I always treated the anthology and scifi short story much as one would a sales pamphlet, but I am quite wrong. I love the little introductions and afterwords that make the community of 1960's SF feel comfy and connected. For once Harlan Ellison takes more than he gives, I chortled heartily at Robert Bloch saying "he is the only organism whose natural habitat is hot water."

Overall a wonderful, wonderful experience! Are there any other good anthologies that mirror this feeling of transformation and insight?

What's the scale that you want to MC to reach or begin with? What angle would they have in their initial knowledge of magic? When you say "magic can do anything," how much effort or resources does the real high end stuff take? How does one attain more magical power? Is every magic user capable of going full I CAN DO ANYTHING? Does attaining higher levels of magical power cost anything to the user? Think of stuff like that and narrow it down. Think about how you want magic to factor into the narrative, and how you would tailor your MC's use of it to fit the story you want to tell.

So, the general idea is that magic comes from using mana, which falls from the sky frequently in certain areas. Each person can only use one of the fours "schools" of magic, but a person can do anything covered by that school as long as they have enough mana to do it and can figure out how to do it effectively.

The average person will probably be able to get one to two splinter-sized pieces of mana a week, which they can either live off of or cast a basic spell. However, what qualifies as a basic spell is kind of unbalanced. A diviner might be able to look a mile away for about a minute, or a transmuter can heal a wound or throw a small fireball. In contrast, an illusionist could probably keep up a hyperrealistic illusion for several minutes or make a small illusion so real it becomes solid.

My intent is that the mc – a transmuter – would start out with no knowledge of magic and no amount of mana, but prior to the climax of the story (where balance inevitably goes out the window) would have enough mana to level a city block and still have enough left over to recover from being impaled in three places

>Companies/awards that looked for genuinely good, innovative books, instead of bland shit written solely to appease the current political climate/appeal to the most number of people possible.

There's no easy answer. "Genuinely good, innovative books" not only don't sell that well, they also tend to take a long time to write even for professionals.

Printed pozloads *are* the smart, upscale market in SFF right now. The mainstream demand is basically Sanderson. Vox Day/Castalia is making a good-faith effort to cultivate an alternative, but they've fallen further and further into quantity > quality just based on the economics of the situation. You can't expect to make money if you refuse to publish anything but god-tier literature.

Sanderson's market, by the way, is nowhere near saturated. These people like to read, a lot, and while their taste is terrible they can definitely tell someone who knows what they're doing from a clueless scrawler. If you're a professional writer with any talent, the incentives to write an OK book every few months instead of a good-to-great book every two years are enormous given that you're going to sell basically the same number of copies of either.

I don't really see this problem as much in the literature scene of another country I follow though. Award winners tend to be genuinely worth reading, and a lot of talented underground writers get attention. Even the freakin Amazon reviews are a lot more reliable. These problems seem to be a lot more exacerbated in the English speaking world, and I believe the American political climate to be largely responsible for that. Anyone would want to read a fantasy story about magic welders and their trade? I feel it would be way too fucking autistic, but there's lots of side /sff/ stuff for the simple comsumer's mind. I'm actually writing quite a hard science-fiction (It's pure ye olde fantasy, not the future science-fiction kind, but with "technology is replaced by magic" instead) fantasy story, with lots of technical details sprinkled in between anime battles and frank herbert-esque tens of pages worth of philosophical rantings.

I don't know why I'm even asking, I'm already 100k words in, it's likely I'll try to publish is either way, even if I bruteforce my way into the industry.

I was enjoying Malazan for the first few books but now I'm on Toll the Hounds and it's just a chore. I'm something around 70% through the whole series so I feel like I should at least see it through to the end or it'll always nag me I didn't finish.

Book 8 is where it really drags and gets self indulgent. The ending to Toll the Hounds is great, but goddamn was it a chore to get through. I spent more time reading it than the first 4 books combined because I kept putting it off.

Book 9 is also pretty slow going because unlike every other book in the series it's only half of a story, it's a pair with book 10. 9 has basically all the set up, and 10 has the payoff.

I love the series, but man is the last 3 books a huge wall to get over.

the closest thing i can think of is a book ive read a long time ago. basically the world ended through a gray goo scenario. only to somehow cause all the nanomachines to start evolution as if they were organic. pretty much only plantlife and animals remained on earth initially but then machanical plants and animals started appearing. eventually a human colony ship that had been malfunctioning returned to earth and all its inhabitants suddenly wake from cryosleep. initially they though this was the planet they would be setteling but it turned out theyve been in cryosleep for millions of years and this is in fact earth. and because they just cant leave again without repairs they repopulate earth. story follows a dude and his love interest and it sort of starts out as a weir mix of what you posted and eventually some sort of cyber-bio punk where theres some sort of cross contamination of biological and mechanical creatures.

maybe someone else recognizes this but i completely forgot the name. it was a fairly hefty book though. around 900 pages i think.
