Not counting the Dark Tower saga (not due to its quality, simply because it's so damn big that it would require a thread unto itself) what are the best Stephen King novels?

he didn't say stephen king was good.
he asked what was the best of stephen king
>what is the tastiest thing on the menu at macdonalds?

>> No.990896

I would tell you, "None of them, Stephen King is a bad author and you should feel bad" but I made a resolution to not judge people's taste on /lit/ any more.

>> No.990903

The Shining, The Stand, Pet Semetary, Carrie, IT. I know you asked for novels, but his short stories are fucking top notch as well. Actually, his short stories are usually much better than his novels.

I'm pretty sure that OP inferred that Dark Tower was good.

Abridged version of the Stand is really the only thing I've ever read of his that I actually *liked*. The unabridged version is terrible though, he likes to talk, he's got a huge ego boner and that's all it is.

>> No.990937

The Mist. not technically a novel, but great nonetheless.

>> No.990956

IT (of course), The Stand, Shining, Pulse, Lisey's Story, Pet Sematary and The Tommyknockers are my favorite King books. In no particular order.

>> No.990965

His short story collection " Everything's Eventual" is pretty good.

I really enjoyed Needful Things. Also, The Shining. The Shining is exactly the same as most of his other books, but it's the first Stephen King "Alcoholic Writer goes crazy" book I read.

>> No.992520

I really liked Misery. Suspenseful as fuck and really something many people reference.

Great book, shame about the ending.

>> No.992537

Probably IT. Didn't mind Carrie.

>> No.992543

I'll probably be the only one to say this, but Hearts in Atlantis. The movie, despite Anthony Hopkins, did not do it justice and only covered the first part of the book, which is good, but loses most of its meaning unless you have the other parts with it. I love this book so very much. It has vague connections to The Dark Tower, but so does all of his work. Just thinking about it gives me nice feelings.

The Girl who Loved Tom Gordon as a lovely little book. Good "gateway" book for people who are sniffy about Stephen King.

He's one man and probably accounts for a significant fraction of the total sum of "fiction words read" throughout the world. The Dickens of his day, deserves better treatment.

Though his attitude to his films is fucked up. He allows most of his novels to become really shit adaptations and then rages over The Shining, which was by far the best.

>> No.992558

I liked Insomnia.
And the girl who loved Tom Gordon is pretty nice too, but short.

>> No.992945

>The Shining, which was by far the best.
Did you even read The Shining. Like 0.1% of the book is in the movie. There is no character-development, and the ending is much more hackneyed.

The Green Mile. I ain't even seen the movie, but the book was awesome.

I happen to love The Talisman. Misery was alright too. Even though Stephen King isn't the greatest writer, I love his shit cuz it tends to be fucked up. And boy do I love fucked up shit.
