Post a book.

If your name is called, you have your next book to read.

Here's your newest favourite book, Arthur.

Yeah. The main event shines so brightly that you can't really look at the events around it, but here you have the whole picture. And it's messed up. You look at the chapters and wonder "when do we get to the flavour aid" but then Jones pulls some new shit and you are like "dude come on really?" and then you get to the end and you are like "yeah okay I get it". For instance everyone knows he made a test run in his church and then did it for real in Jonestown, but there are still a lot of holes and leaps in the narrative. How did we get to that point? What lead up to the FBI recording? You might for example imagine him as super charismatic and his followers super brainwashed, but that's not really the case.
It's like knowing Scientology is sketchy but then you read something like Going Clear (which I also enjoyed reading), and you are like "oh what".

It's a story about self actualization and 1970s spirituality as told through the lens of a seagull who wants to improve his flying skills instead of focusing on fighting over food with the rest of his flock.

Guys, sorry to hijack the thread for a sec, but I didn't think this was worth a new thread.

I've made the mistake of doing nothing but playing video games for my teenage/young adult life. I need to change as a person. I need a book that's going to mould my personality into something more polished and more sociable/morally straight .

Books like starship troopers, 1984, brave new world etc are cool, but not what I'm looking for. I need books that I can extract personality / life lessons from.

Thanks in advance guys

Philosophy is probably the right choice. People say start with the greeks but you honestly don't have to.
You can try Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Nietzsche
If that's no good, or too hard, Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk has been motivating for a lot of people and is an easy read.
I am trying to pick easy reads for beginners here. It's hard to push through though. In any case, expect to take several years to change.

A lot of it is, yeah. You're not really supposed to read it cover-to-cover. Of course you don't want to read endless genealogy or Jewish law. Just skim along and try different books from it - there's law, history, myth, poetry, prophecy, etc., you should be able to find something you can read. With emphasis on poetry, I suggest King James Version. Most newer translations are a rape of the language.

Forget "self-help", forget anti-depressants and anxiety medicine. Lack of dopamine release is likely due to cultural aspects of the present age, conformity of urban society which humans really aren't designed to fit, and the spiritual void the dying institution of religion left behind.

Reading philosophy will slowly increase your intelligence, and make clear the causality language has with self-awareness. So tighten your butthole and persevere through the diction, because it's good for you and it builds character.
