One of these books will be the first I read in English. Help me decide:
- Infinite Jest
- Gravity's Rainbow
- Moby Dick
- Lolita
- Blood Meridian
- Mason & Dixon
- Ulyssess

I already read Portrait of an artist, V and Blood Meridian in my native, Serbian, but I heard it is sin to read books above translated. Should I read something to warm up kr should I just dive in?

i would suggest reading modernist poetry in translation with side-by-side text. im doing this with apollinaire to learn french. although your level of english is probably higher than my french.

i just cant see why you would want to waste your first experience with these books without a more developed understanding of english. what about reading short stories first?

Well when I was younger I built almost a library with my dad, but then I started going to English-speaking school and discovered Nabokov, now I feel bad because all this money spent on books in Serbian while lit is telling me that books should be read in English so I want fresh start. Do you think books should be read in English?

You should read books in English only if they're written in English and if it's worthwhile. If you read Balzac in English you're just an idiot.

So you are saying that I should read Balzac in French or in my native? On what "level" of English should I be to read Infinite Jest or Gravity's rainbow (these books aren't translated here) or Lolita as a matter of fact
