I'm a third year physics major at Tech right now. They changed that restaurant to a terribly overpriced organic place that I've only tried once. They did build a big dining complex next to folk/caldwell that opens in the fall, though.
I like my school. It's composed entirely of the kids who coasted by high school without trying with perfect grades, then got here and hit a wall, so if you dig deep enough into literally 95% of students here you'll find inadequacy-fueled depression and suicidal thoughts hidden at various depths. Sounds awful but makes for a surprisingly interesting environment. I just wish there were more kids who gave a fuck about the humanities, nobody here reads real books except my girlfriend.

Fuck these threads.I managed to completely tank my GPA through lack of motivation and depression, ruining what portion of my life was not yet ruined. It's not hard to completely fuck your shit up if you are depressed, never study, and don't show up to class. Especially if you are not in a shitty meme major like English literature and can't just bullshit your way into an A. I graduated community college in 2016 with a GPA of 2.184 for Computer Science. The only college in the state that accepted me was a terrible normalfag infested party school, Radford University. The average person here is the stereotypical dude bro and club whore, I am completely isolated from everyone else. Even the pretense (which was at least present in community college) of making friends and finding a lover, are thrown out the window. I hate every second of my time spent here.

Now I'm clammering to raise my GPA (which I elevated to a 2.4 this semester with a GPA of 3.6) above the 2.5 threshold so I can apply to a slightly better school, ODU, in Fall of 2018. Literally no other college in the state will accept me, the required GPA is a 3.0 for my major, so VCU, etc are all out. Someone HELP MEEEEEEEEEEE.

Finished my Master's in Japanese language. Here universities are free, so I don't have any sort of debt dragging me down.

Relative to the number of Master's graduates of Japanese language, there are rather many Japanese companies here, so it's not that hard to get a job as a company translator or something like that.

But I want to continue in academia with focus on early 20th century Japanese literature. So I applied for a scholarship-supported study stay in Japan with the hope of continuing to Doctoral program afterwards. Got a promise of acceptance from the university I want, so it's all one a very good track.

For undergraduate, economics doesn't have that much math. You only really need up to calculus, maybe linear algebra and multivar but that is often optional. There are usually statistics requirements as well but most of my undergrad experience was theory. Of course if you want to go on to graduate education you are going to need much more, depending on which aspect of economics you want to go on in.

English department kicks ass. I'm pretty pissed that Knapp is taking a sabbatical this year, and that my schedule conflicts with Faletra's Dante course. Faletra is one of the coolest professors on campus and I would've loved to have taken another class with him.

I tried taking Latin (fucking difficult) and switched to French, which was great. It seems like all of the lang depts are awesome; some of those upper level russian classes sound incredible. There's a Masters-level class being taught this year called "Soviet Science Fiction", that I'm thinking about trying to finagle.

There has been quite a few controversial posters put up lately, including numerous Holocaust denial ones over here. I can't say I'm surprised about the Chinese ones, people in /auspol/ joke about Melbourne and Sydney being Chinese colonies but the percentage of asians in the Group of 8 really is extraordinary. Yeah. Chinese foreign students are just one front of Chinese take-over of this country. They're training the new managerial class.

Some Chinese billionaires actually managed to mobilise thousands of Chinese students to counter-protest some Pro-Tibetan activists in Canberra a few months ago. You wouldn't have heard this in the news of course. I didn't until recently.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-06-07/china-must-be-told-to-stop-interfering-in-australian-affairs/8596568

>The first incident to alarm Australia's intelligence service — the sudden mobilisation and arrival of thousands of Chinese students to Canberra to protect the Olympic torch ("sacred flame" in Chinese media reports) from anti-China protesters — provided a perfect illustration of this difference.

>For mainstream Australian TV viewers, the sight of Chinese students being arrested after shouting down and assaulting pro-Tibet protesters looked like a colossal soft power fail.

Combine this with rising foreign ownership, the importation of foreign labour in the north, the increasing influence of Chinese money on universities and politics, and this country will be a Chinese vassal state in a few years.

That's not even to mention immigration. Sydney and Melbourne are becoming very Chinese. And people aren't batting an eye because they're "model minorities". Heh, they won't be a minority for very long.

There are multiple ways to get government scholarship in Japan for various levels of study.

I chose the way of an embassy-recommended research student.

As such research student you can research pretty much anything as long as you pass the screenings and find a Japanese professor that will agree to be your advisor. No Japanese language proficiecy is needed actually, except for topics like Japanese language, history or literature.

I'm going with literature and want to do the entire research in Japanese, so I made sure to write my research proposal in Japanese, get a good JLPT score etc. etc.

GPA is one of the things that gets judged during the screening, but in my country GPA isn't really a thing and most of my course subjects only have Pass/Fail grading, so my grade sheet was full of "Pass".

I have to say, from looking around the internet I got the idea that this program is insanely competitive in countries with high population where there'll be many applicants.

Anyway, check out this for various programs Japanese government offers and consider what fits best for your needs.

That depends on how social you are. I liked it because I enjoy meeting new people. There's your usual boring administrative stuff but that's all orientations, the games are corny shit but everything you do is meant to introduce you to people, so I didn't mind. At night there's cool stuff going on, I played capture the flag for like two hours and had a good time. Some of the future greek kids will slink off to frats and get drunk, which is very much against both faset rules and greek rules but nobody enforces any of that.

I hope my senior thesis is impressive enough to help me get accepted into any decent program. I'm thinking about applying to grants or other programs to also help boost my chances. With everyone going for engineering these days, I imagine there might some departments that might want me.

If I can, I plan on going immediately to grad school for literature. I would like to stay in education for as long as I live.

Go for physics and math if you end up double majoring. CS is a meme degree, in a university as good as berkeley you'll pick up two or three programming languages just from physics classes and then you can get all you'd get out of CS with a summer spent studying it.
Good luck anon, I wish my scholarship didn't have a limited amount of credit hours so I could add a second major too.

For me it was a no brainer. Where else to research Japanese literature than in Japan?

If you want to study something directly unrelated to Japan, STEM or something, during the screening interview you're gonna be asked why you want to do it in Japan. I presume the best possible answer is that you found a professor in Japan that focuses on the topic you want to research. And of course later you'll have to secure that professor's agreement to guide you.

You only need to finish undergrad to apply for the "research student" program. But as I said, I heard that it's really competitive in countries with high population. And for topics unrelated to Japan, I presume they cut away anyone who doesn't have a good reason to research said topic in Japan.

Sure as hell beats my "accelerated composition" class, shit was so vapid all I really recall is going over how the pictures in some news article were meant to made the guy look crazy, half a class showing Disney songs and how they exhibited gender roles (Gaston was one of them obviously), and one of the choices for the last assignment being an essay about a social justice (her words) topic. Also took a "literature in 20th/21st century context" class as a gen ed, first day was talking about zombies and the rest was pretty low-level "this book reflects x crazy thing about modernity" stuff (I remember the instructor praising my "understanding of how things work" as unparalleled for my final essay that amounted to "dude Gattaca lmao").

The schools "brainwashing" students with Marxism/progressivism meme isn't 100% baseless, but it's non-committal as fuck.
