To be fair, universities ARE becoming more of a business than an educator and the sole benefit for education in university, that is having feedback, easily found discussion with people with a similar interest as you and being tested on your understanding and ideas by people who are likely more intelligent and educated than you are, is slowly being eroded by terrible teachers brought on by a focus on research at the expense of everything else and the masses of students entering the university system today.
In my experience university today is less about exploring ideas and coming to a conclusion in an environment that is conducive to reaching a real understanding of a topic and more about being indoctrinated into following the official line that the universities are expected to teach as well as getting a foot into post-grad/networking.
