The new woman of 21st century feminism might be intimidating to the inexperienced, but they are paper tigers, golden retrievers, deep down they yearn for the patriarchal male, they want to get dominated, as nature wills it, the woman trapped inside every feminist cries out for male domination. the muh female empowerment is just a flimsy facade hiding an Electra complex, psychosexual daddy fixation. The point of this poem isn’t necessarily it’s ineptness this time, rather it’s more about the pains associated with being reminded of our own mortality. It’s perfectly obvious really, “the next time he points out the hair on your legs is growing back” that sentence alone sums it up quite nicely. You can try to beat the clock (shaving) but you will never succeed (hair grows back). Her boyfriend reminds her of this painful fact. She realizes that she will die, but doesn’t want to think about it. “your body is not his home he is a guest” This is her attempt to demonstrate godliness over him. Her body is akin to a temple for him to worship at. Her fear of mortality fuels her God complex. “Never outstep his welcome again”. Admittedly, the wording is strange, however the content is solid. This could be viewed as mortals not paying respect to God. You will find interesting parallels in Aristophanes’ speech in Plato’s Symposium, I have no doubt that she drew inspiration from it.

Fascinating sociological document, glimpse into the mind of the woman in the street. from 19th century protestant piety, from unquestioning devotion to Father, Husband, God, to Rupi fucking Kaur, what happened? I insist, inside every woman lies a bitch in heat that wants to be dominated. the ancients were well aware of that, fuck look at feminists LARPing as amish sex slaves from a Handmaid's Tale, they know the patriarchal male is coming back big time (Trump's election was just the begining) and Nature impels them to Submit, even though their liberal arts education might disagree. Deep down Woman wants to submit and Woman will submit to the alpha male, that's just how things go.

Would innocuous poetry cause this much anger in the literary community? There is nothing innocuous about Rupi's poetry. She is perfectly aware that it is sickeningly simple, unabashed and even inane for some.

Jerry Saltz wrote in “Sincerity and Irony Hug it Out”, New Yorker Magazine, 27 May 2010:
>I'm noticing a new approach to artmaking in recent museum and gallery shows. … It's an attitude that says, "I know that the art I'm creating may seem silly, even stupid, or that it might have been done before, but that doesn't mean this isn't serious." At once knowingly self-conscious about art, unafraid, and unashamed, these young artists not only see the distinction between earnestness and detachment as artificial; they grasp that they can be ironic and sincere at the same time, and they are making art from this compound-complex state of mind.

Not a single one of you is genuinely trying to understand what it is that people see in Rupi Kaur's poetry. I know someone who works with domestic abuse victims and she tells me that women who weren't previously readers at all love her poetry. They say that for the first time, they are able to have their emotions articulated and they can finally reflect in a simple way.

I know she isn't a literary genius but I still commend her for creating something that stirs feeling and thought with a lot of women of all backgrounds. Even if it's tumblr poetry.

>> No.9799051

I can agree with that. I mean, I don't hate her and I think the hostility that some people have against her is fucked up, and I can see how what she writes is nice and all to some people (although, every single Rupi Kaur reader I know is a rich young girl), but, yeah, it's tumblr poetry.

I like your work; it embodies the simple fleetingness of human communication, and also unexpected new beginnings. Raw human connextion, deep feelings. But it's not all roses and bunnies though my friend, because your technique is sorely lacking. I expanded upon your work by adding a judicious line break, whose position I have pondered longly. You will also notice, and most remarkably so, an experimental element, a small poetic pet of mine, a little wild folly of the mind and pen if you will: namely the three dots. I hope you will be able to recognize the simple flowing brilliance that I have coaxed onto your admittedly genuinely special poem.

I think it is overly simplistic and banal. it's a blunt metaphor that could have been expanded upon, there are plenty of art museums that are shit, kitch, contemporary, touristy museums that dont garner any art of value, Rupi could have used more art related descriptions, brush strokes, vistas, crackling paint, but she just goes right for the puncline without any effort. compare it to 'Ode on a Grecian Urn' by Keats and it's child's play, literally could have been written by a bookworm middleschooler.

How is it that everyone constantly reposts this shit but nobody knows where it actually came from?
Rupi Kaur posted some pics of her menstrual bleeding through her sweatpants onto her bedsheet, which twitter removed because it's unpleasant. This generated controversy among the huffpost crowd which gained her 100k twitter followers and put her "on the right side of history" so it was easy for her to generate hype for her shit poetry, which even has pictures so it can even be sold to the legitimately illiterate.

it is real peice of Rimbaud from Fragments of Folio 12(part of Illuminations) reformated into the clearly superior Ruponian style used in Milk and Honey

it was originally a Prose Poem(Rimbaud's main style) like so:

Alright, so obviously we can all agree that Rupi writes complete trash poetry (if you can even call it that), but what is it that makes it bad? Like how can I make a solid argument to a Rupi reader that her poetry isn't good? You can't just say "she pretends to say a lot but really says nothing" or "she can't connect to people" because obviously these women do feel an emotional disturbance when they read these poems. It's so bad, but seemingly impossible to prove to someone with a differing opinion. So, please, can anyone explain concisely what it is about Rupi's poetry that makes it bad?

>> No.9805584

Well if I really wanted to tear down someone for liking this (and I would really question my motives for doing this, because even if Rupi's poetry is bad, I would also assume jealousy is the foundational emotion at play), then I would ask questions to really try to get to the bottom of why they like it. You're trying to attack something without giving it a shred of validity, which is a big mistake. They would just dig their heels in, and rightfully so, because you would be insulting something (i.e., their taste) without actually knowing anything about it other than your own politically charged assumptions.
