My friend was a religion major at an Ivy League school, she mostly used the NRSV for research.

We were talking about this in the Torah/Pentateuch thread. If you are serious scholar, you read ancient Hebrew/Greek as well as some of the more obscure forgotten languages. But if you a literary scholar, it sounds like the annotated Oxford Bible is a good place to start. KJV is always pretty good too, considering is relatively accurates and it tries to preserve some the Bible's poetry and melodic patterns

KJV is where it all went wrong. Idiots making bad translations in order to fit their opinions. For example, Leviticus 20:13.

Ok, I guess that's better than nothing, but she would be much more credible if she could claim to be a student of Christian theology and to have knowledge of both Hebrew and Greek

I see you making no arguments, so what does that say about you?

It is the culmination of modern Biblical scholarship post-Dead Sea Scrolls, and when you are the Bible of choice for the Princeton Seminary and Yale Divinity, that carries weight

1. there are non-theistic religions

2. You don't have to subscribe to any religion to appreciate the facet of human experience that is encountering the great existential mysterium and subsequently human en devours to try to grapple and make sense of that.

3. religion is a fascinating human phenomena, religious studies is an interesting combination of history, language, sociology/anthropology, philosophy, literature, etc.
