>Over the past few centuries, artists have successfully developed a host of imaginative and unusual methods for applying paint to canvas. But few are more colourful than the rectal squirt method developed by Keith Boadwee, Adjunct Professor of Fine Arts at the California College of the Arts, and visiting faculty member at the San Francisco Art Institute.

>The professor part-fills his rectum with (non toxic) water-based paint using a rubber hot water bottle with an attached plastic tube. Then, by carefully positioning himself near a large blank canvas placed horizontally on the art-studio floor, he is able, at the appropriate moment, to eject and direct a constrained jet of paint. Thereby rapidly creating one-of-a-kind artworks with an appositely chaotic and spontaneous feel.

Look, just because this idiot is doing stunt paintings doesn't suddenly invalidate contemporary art.

There are still painters with talent and skill out there, like John Currin.

The real problem is that art lacks an audience. Somebody like this is doing transgressive/queerpunk/inyerface/bodyart whatever. It's like "Yams Up My Granny's Ass" by Karen Finley.

But seriously, it's not like the 18th century lacked for mediocrity in art either---have you ever seen a painting by George Stubbs?

I don't think what this guy is doing is art. I don't find it interesting at all. But at the same time, to use him as an example of what "art" is about, or what's wrong with "art", is like trying to use Kirk/Spock slash fiction as a way of describing how "fiction" is pointless.

His bullshit isn't "acclaimed". If you read his resume---conveniently posted on his website---and you know anything about the art world, you'd realize he's basically a nonentity.

If you look at a decent book on contemporary art---like Matthew Collings' "It Hurts" or reviews by Robert Hughes---it's not like anyone in the actual art world pays attention to this guy.

If you're upset that he gets *employed* by doing shit like this, at art schools, well so what. People get employed by hedge funds and Bernie Madoff and Enron. And what they do has a lot worse consequences than some idiot squirting paint out of his rectum.

Plus nobody ever said that the people who taught at art schools are any good. It's kind of a given that they aren't. Read "Art School Confidential" by Dan Clowes.

I don't think it's any kind of sinister "gay agenda" on the part of the queers that makes (say) WH Auden a homosexual. I think it has more to do with the fact that WH Auden liked sucking cocks.

Yes. You might also notice from his resume he was born in rural Mississippi. We in the Queer Conspiracy have a term for people like that. We call them "farm fags". You know, homosexuals from the Bible belt who still can't stop running around reminding people that they're here and they're queer and blah blah blah. >The funniest is the Speers photo which shows her naked, pregnant and surrounded by the truncated words, "best new idea inside." ... whatever critique one might have of Boadwee's work, he's definitely not making the world stupider. Instead, here is a kind of kinesthetic visual jungle gym where body and mind have to negotiate; sex (with man or woman), companionship (dog), drugs (blue boy poppers) and needs like food (bacon). To cap it all off a corresponding hole is cut in a gallery wall, implicating the entire space. It's a kind of cosmopolitan visual matrix where the boulder completes the Sisyfusian allusion...
>Which leads us to the best piece in the show Untitled (piss in mouth), which is quite simply Boadwee on his back, aiming a stream of urine into his own mouth. As a stunt it is full of self effacing narcissism... conflating Eros, humiliation, self sufficient grandiosity and an allusion to the spectacle that is the artist's way. It's about as simple and as complicated as a photograph can be. The work also parallels baroque era grotesques and the golden rain of the Danae myth. It's also a humanistic tour de force... an aesthetic circuit beginning and ending with the body, something most Americans only think about in dieting terms. Like Mapplethorpe, its a beautiful image that might be initially slightly shocking but retains attention because it is formally beautiful.

Be known as a well dressed man who's open minded about sexuality, be a good cook, put some underlying homo erotic things in your novels like always explaining how handsome the male protagonist is.

personally I'm a 100% straight man, I made out with a friend when drunk during a truth or dare game and once I went to a gaybar with friends, so do something like that if you get the chance then mention it in your autobiography and if anyone ever questions your sexuality refuse to discuss it

By the time you're dead, Western Culture will be post-gay anyway. Don't worry about it.

In other words, hoping to be claimed posthumously by the queer conspiracy in 50 years' time---or whenever you plan to die, I'm making a rough guess here based on the fact that you haven't started your career yet---is like hoping to be claimed posthumously as a sincere worshipper of Zeus. Some kinds of cultural identity (religious, sexual, what have you) just go from being dangerous and transgressive to being absolutely irrelevant within a short period of time. Look at the history of Christianity between Nero and Julian the Apostate. Nero was feeding Christians to the lions. Julian could barely summon enthusiasm for the old gods on which Nero's Rome depended.

Similarly, what people do with their genitals is going to go from dangerous/scary/transgressive to being utterly irrelevant.

I mean, at this point, you already have FTM transsexuals who claim to be gay men. Whereas I always thought that one thing gay men usually had in common with each other was a penis. The real fact is that sexuality was always incredibly fluid and indeterminate, and gay and straight and all the rest of those definitions are ultimately going to turn out to be irrelevant.

I mean seriously, who cares?
