9260720 No.9260720 [Reply] [Original]

My girlfriend came home from work tonight, and in the middle of talking about her night she says to me: "I think I've renounced feminism," very matter-of-factly.

She then said that feminism "has been co-opted by capitalist opportunists like beyonce and [some other celebrity] and media outlets and others" who "wear feminism like a badge," and "to many it's just an accessory or a talking point wrapped up in identity politics."

Then she asked me something like "What do you think the next philosophy/political movement I get into should be?"

She asked me if I had any books, but naturally I didn't recommend her any so I could first check with you guys what my next move should be.

What should my next move be?

Literally tell her to start with the greeks. Plato's 5 dialogues.

I'm in law school right now and I realized that I have spent more time studying the law then I have any of the radical political ideology I casually talk about. Can I really explain Anarcho-syndicalism in a detailed manner or am I just a poser? On the realist level I can talk about and address issues of local politics and reasons why or why not to choose city council members, but can I truely articulate a more broad line of reasoning and motivation to cause other people to critically think about the world around them?

I do not think I can. So I have been learning about learning, as well as starting with Plato. I think she needs to take a step back before diving back into the shouting void.

For helping your girlfriend:

Well, my girlfriend is a bit younger than me, so she sort of looks up to me as her intellectual mentor a little bit. I give off the vibe like:

>oh if only I'd had someone like me when I was your age for suggestions and guidance.

But I actually have no idea. So I just ask /lit/, not outright, but I ask for suggestions for myself and then give them to her. She thinks I'm really smart.

But before I did that, I had a more elaborate system: I would come to /lit/, go to the catalogue, and count 15 topics in. And from there I would go back until I reached a topic of the type: "Recommend me.." or "Where should I start with..." and I would then open that thread, and then I would take the third serious suggestion and give it to her.

That is how the first philosophy book my girlfriend read came to be Martin Heidegger's "Being and Time" and the second philosopher she read, straight after, was Confucius.

She then moved on to Stirner.

Maybe you should try something like that.

Perhaps she believes only in the old meaning of feminism but realises that it has come to mean something completely ill defined at best, and at worst, a divisive ideology, and so is rejecting the term? Or perhaps she believes that the feminist goal has been satisfied, and that the remainers are either overly dogmatic professional victims, or they are vain narcissists who only want to seem hip.I don't know.

By the last paragraph, he starts arguing that only men should inherit property relations and that men are the only ones capable of "non-material advantages, such as intellect, learning, courage, and the like."

>That the property which men have with difficulty acquired by long-continued struggling and hard work should afterwards come into the hands of women, who, in their want of reason, either squander it within a short time or otherwise waste it, is an injustice as great as it is common, and it should be prevented by limiting the right of women to inherit. It seems to me that it would be a better arrangement if women, be they widows or daughters, only inherited the money for life secured by mortgage, but not the property itself or the capital, unless there lacked male descendants. It is men who make the money, and not women; therefore women are neither justified in having unconditional possession of it nor capable of administrating it. Women should never have the free disposition of wealth, strictly so-called, which they may inherit, such as capital, houses, and estates. They need a guardian always; therefore they should not have the guardianship of their children under any circumstances whatever.

This is so painfully outdated it almost reads like some crazy man's delusion.

That's definitely true, but that's part of the issue. I've never read any literature that made me disregard women as equals, it's purely through personal experience. Through treating them as equals and eventually realizing they simply don't engage with the world with the same depth that men do, I simply can't take them seriously anymore, as much as I wish I could.

The only thing I hold out for is that it's more an age thing (early 20s), and women just take longer to mature mentally/spiritually than men.

>Can you not even consider the possibility that you have been deluded into thinking there is a delusion of a delusion into accepting that egalitarianism is the proper way a society should evolve?

Have you ever considered that maybe you thinking I have a delusion is a delusion on your part and we are all part of this greater delusion of late capitalism, of which we delusionally think we have any control over and that the way gender and its relations constructs itself is a product of the march of history and the material forces that drive it?

Pretty delusional bro.

The only thing worse is him coming here to ask us what to tell her.

OP should dump her for being such a fucking pseud, on par with those celebs she suddenly detests (probably because of coming across some website like alternet that had an article calling them out), then neck himself for being even fucking dumber than her.

Your girlfriend has already displayed herself incapable of conviction or original thought, OP. Just like all things, as a woman, she only wants attention.

Your girlfriend is dumb. Why would you renounce feminism just because you are unhappy with misapplications or misperceptions of it? Just make sure you live your life so as to provide a counter example.

It would be better to never get laid at all than to let a woman shit all over you at every opportunity and degrade yourself for her in an attempt to get laid.

Anybody who has been laid at least once ever can see that.

Does going to the church out of love for the tradition and the fuzzy feeling it gives you make your motivation less worthy than someome who chastises himself while reciting Bible verses?
Why do people always get so elitist about living life? Does it give you pleasure knowing that these people aren't real Christians? Would Jesus have judged them for wanting to live their life with faith and participation in the Holy Service?

I don't understand you, it's like you're looking for reasons to hate yourself and others. Oh wait, right, this is 4chan.

How about someone who actually believes in and worships God, rather than turning their brain off for an hour?
>Why do people always get so elitist about living life?
If St. Paul thought like you the church would have died out before the third century. It is concern with how other people live their lives that motivates us to try to help them improve. I don't hate any human being regardless of their sin thanks to an acute awareness of my own failings, but I certainly hate the self-centered and borderline Satanic impulse some branches of the church have to water down the Gospel and the responsibility that all people bear in light of it.
