What do you think of Thug Notes?

Is it a good substitute for reading?

School teachers used to show us thug notes. I prefered watching these while in school rather than reading, so yes. It is a good substitute for reading.

It's a decent booktuber actually, got some shitty humour, but that's still 100 x times better than all the stupid girls talking about YA

>> No.9244409

It's pretty good. The joke is more than a bit overdone at this point but the presenter reads better books and has better analysis than most booktubers.

>Is it a good substitute for reading?
No.

the humor gets stale but his analysis is legitimately comprehensive and well presented. Which is impressive, especially given the comparatively short time frame. If he dropped the "thug" motif he would be a God-tier booktuber, but then again if he dropped the "thug" motif he wouldn't be half a big as he is

just checked this shit out yesterday but i dont think they found the right balance between substance and time
missing key plot points and shit

He's unironically better than John Green.

I look at Thug Notes the same way I look at rappin' teachers or 'cool' youth ministers.
...because I'm old enough to remember those.

They're trying to get young people to look at 'old' mediums using their own language.
I think Thug Notes has a leg up on some of it though, by playing up the sarcasm.
Not trying to make it seem too earnest makes it more digestible.

But it's not for me. I'm too old for that shit.

>Is it a good substitute for reading?
no, but it is a helpful learning aid and if it gets kids getting into reading then i am all for it. i dont know how im supposed to take the idea of a black charicature narrating tho. kinda seems wrong, but he does seem fun in his other videos

The presenter doesn't read anything but the script given to him.

>> No.9244599

>>9244484
He definitely prioritizes theme over plot, I remember his Heart of Darkness overview blazed through the plot and focused almost entirely on the themes and characters. if I had to trade one for the other I'd definitely prioritize theme over plot too, but it would be nice if he'd do a longer and more comprehensive overview, but that kind of defeats the purpose of a fun and accessible resource for kids

>> No.9244613

>>9244529
Well then the guy or guys who write the script read better books and have better analysis than most booktubers.
