specifically 'light' being used as a verb to indicate she actively shines which effectively compares her to any bright source of light (think the sun, or the collective lights of buildings) by saying if she were complete (again, not the metaphor, but a prerequisite for the metaphor exist) should would be /like/ a bright object that could light the whole city.

Verbal metaphors take some explaining but they're simple to make and are often forms of personification. Take this shitty example:

They are good for what they are, making girls feel special and good about themselves.

Poe is a good starting point for poetry, just know that there is better stuff out there. If you put in the time try reading Blake and Keats, Sylvia Plath is also easier to digest, after a while try Emily Dickinson, look into anlises online and try to discern what they're trying to say and compare it to what you get from them. It's a slow burn but once you get going you'll be rewarded with really beautiful experiences, not this saccharine watered down sjw pandering shit.

This is true. There is a context you need to understand about Kaur before you start critiquing her for irrelevant reasons. She's a young poet (24), she doesn't work entirely in the Western tradition and there is precedence to her style, she's a bit of a pseud honestly, she resonates with young women (especially women of colour), she was published because she had such a big following on the internet rather than for being the greatest contemporary poet, she is not representative of contemporary poetry.

I don't particularly like her but I'd rather read her poetry than the criticisms against her poetry because I haven't seen a strong, convincing criticism against her that even gives an erudite appearance -- instead just feelings about what is and isn't art (while arguing against subjectivity). At least I get the appeal of Kaur.
