That's pretty much what a professor is. They read and study the texts and tell you the most important parts and maybe tell you to read a few pages yourself.

That is for science, history, philosophy, etc. Of course for literature you will have to read for yourself.

Yes you can do that, that's what I do. I have read about the plot of hundreds of classics on Wikipedia (and sometimes looked elsewhere on the web for more info I've decided it's one of my favourite books that I haven't read) and have been able to have conversations with people about them. In the mean time, it frees me up to read long fantasy series and play vidya.

sparknotes is pretty ordinary. it shoehorns in a lot of the same predictable high school themes like class differences and gender roles and backs them up with forced symbolism - it's tailormade for high school essays, if all the "which harry potter character are you?" and "10 ways to see if your crush is into you!" on the sidebar didn't clue you in.

it's also ubiquitous, if your talking about a book with someone, they've almost certainly read the sparknote and will be able to call you out if you parrot their analysis
