Well no fucking wonder he didn't get into art school. What kind of downy handles clay like that?

In any case, I don't think I have a terribly strong visual imagination, but I am trying to acquire some appreciation for the plastic arts. I guess that one of my favorites currently is Botticelli's Madonna del Magnificat, although I can't shake the feeling that I like it in large part because of Walter Pater's analysis of it. Pater points out that the Madonna can barely hold the pen to write the prayer to herself (Ave Maria), and her expression is one of whistfulness among great glories, so overwhelmed is she by the beatitude thrust somewhat unwillingly upon her: she yearns for a more familiar earthliness. And there is an excellent contrast between the almost malevolent glare of the androgynous angel holding the inkpot and his partner who looks on impassive. So all of these things I can appreciate, but I can't help but feel they are essentially literary qualities, and that I perhaps prefer an excellent articulation in words of the scene to the scene itself. I'm afraid that my ability to appreciate color and form for its own sake has been shot through by the age of the screen.

Are there any good books geared towards helping people with a literary/philosophical bent to appreciate fine arts? Any recommendations greatly appreciated.
