Why do literary agents request LGBT works so much as if the most popular books aren't about straight people and most of the audience is straight?

Because it's more marketable than you realise. The largest demographic among people who read contemporary literature is straight women, and many straight women enjoy reading about fags.

It's called virtue signalling. Publishers are doing what any company does, which is portraying themselves as morally righteous to their target audience.

The publishing industry is mainly geared towards middle class liberals. These people value "diversity" and "tolerance" (or at least, like to see themselves that way.) Therefore they're offered books which make them feel good about how tolerant they are.

It's all a bit pathetic, and nothing to do with good literature. But then the publishing industry has never been concerned with that.

Because literary agents are mostly white or (((white))) women living in New York City and thus possess a certain set of political sensibilities. It wouldn't surprise me if 99% of literary agents didn't vote for Trump.

I'm not even exaggerating when I say that the publishing industry is ~85% female.

Statistics show that every new book published in 2016 was by or about either a PoC or a queer. If things continue along this trend, by the end of 2017, all major publishers will have retroactively banned and condemned all works written by white men!
