What is it with all these leatherbounds recently? Did B&N engineer the perfect way to trick YA and fantasy readers into buying the occasional classic? Same with the penguin cloth ones.

I'm not saying they don't, but at least from my own experience hardcovers from those publishers, when they exist, tend to be a fair bit more expensive.

I don't normally buy hardcovers anyway, I think they are much less comfortable to read unless the book is fucking massive, or it's a reference book that I expect to leave sitting open on a desk or something, eg. in the case of a textbook I'm studying from. I know some people like hardcovers though, so it seems like they could nearly be worthwhile based on that.

Also I agree, you can't read most of them without creasing unless you are painfully careful, however some of my black classics are different from the others for no reason. I have a copy of Epictetus' Discourses and it is super floppy. You can bend it back on itself and not crease at all.

Yup, something like that. I took a peek into a huge sci-fi bookstore in my town recently, and they had a shelf full of classics bound in that style (same as OP). I suppose it's the new thing that they're pushing on the plebes - but I can't say I think it's a bad thing. If more people read classics, that's always good.

>Study from the same researcher in 2016
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/274873711_The_Digitization_of_Literary_Reading_Contributions_from_Empirical_Research

Studies comparing the visual
ergonomics of different screens indicate that reading on screens based on
electronic ink is very similar to reading on paper, and that e-readers
such as Kindle may even in some reading situations provide better
legibility (cf., e.g., Siegenthaler, Wurtz, Bergamin & Groner 2011),
whereas research comparing conventional screens (i.e. cathode ray tube
or LCD) have typically found that features such as flickering,
backlighting, and so on cause visual fatigue which, in turn, may impede
higher-level cognitive processes such as recall and comprehension (Noyes
& Garland 2003; Baccino 2004; Garland & Noyes 2004; Blehm, Vishnu,
Khattack, Mitra & Yee 2005). Whether such differences in visual
ergonomics between electronic ink and LCD/backlit screens correlate
with, or even cause, differences pertaining to other aspects of literary
reading, such as empathy and sympathy, immersion and transportation,
and other forms of emotional engagement, remains to be empirically
established.

SBR has literary and artistic merit. The other parts I would categorize as good fun.
JoJo's is much more admirable than any YA fiction novel or other high school-tier things.

i've got one of those (the floor standing ones). it's great. i can store almost as many books as a full size bookcase in about the same floor area as a 12" vinyl LP.

i bought mine in a sale. i wish i'd bought 3 or 4 more but now they're really expensive and i can't bring myself to pay full price for them. life is pain.

Today I decided that I would store em away. I'm not getting rid of them tho - a few of them are actually either signed or first editions (my hardcover copy of The Long Patrol is both!), but I do have a Redwall tattoo and I figure with that I already have Redwall pretty close to my heart. I'm gonna put em away and save them and dedicate my shelf to books that I actually read nowadays. A bit of the lower left shelf is gonna change in the future tho - I'm planning on filing it with more valuable books by Harlan Ellison. I'm pretty already proud of my PKD collection however.
