Is this good reading? I only know of its existence because it ws mentioned in a dostoevsky novel. What version is best? There are like several on Amazon.

It's a large compilation of hagiographies. Does that interest you? I can't imagine reading it for non-religious purposes.

Well, then you might give it a try. It is considered a classic in Catholic literature. It's been revised several times by people other than Butler. I understand that the current revision is very concerned with debunking miracles and dealing with colonialism, etc. You might want to avoid that one. I'm not sure about the earlier revisions. The original is always free online.

A similar collection, but Eastern Orthodox, is called the Prologue of Ohrid, if you are interested.
