My mother is one of those people that you wouldn't expect to read. She watched Jersey Shore and Rock of Love and all that shitty, mind-numbing TV.

However, she chugs through books faster than I do. She reads at least a book every 2 weeks.

But it's all shit. Danielle Steel, Baldacci. All of those writers who use ghostwriters. She truly enjoys it and hails it as fantastic storytelling. At least shes not into Twilight or Harry Potter.

My question is: Is it better to read shit, or to not read at all?

Reading fiction is just another way to alleviate boredom. I don't think it's very interesting to ask whether it's good or bad.

I honestly believe Potter/Twilight is a good thing. I'm hoping it will act like a gateway drug and at least some small percentage of those people will move on to being regular readers.

As for your mom? If those stories give her pleasure, then what's wrong with that? Don't judge.

OP here.

I'm a literature Snob. I'll admit it. It's not about being hipster or anything else anyone will assuredly say.

Reading anything is better than reading nothing.
Especially if she enjoys it -- that's what the "shit" is written for anyway, right? To entertain people?
Nothing wrong with utilizing for it's purpose...

However, the moment she begins praising it as wonderful pieces of literature -- that's when it gets bad.

Your mother is bored and horny. Tell your dad to take her on a date or something.

No, it's more about self-importance

Well I hate to say it but that's YOUR problem, not hers. It's like being an audiophile groaning about the quality of your mom's stereo. No one but you cares.
