Richard Adams was, I would argue, the last survivor in that tradition of British fantasy that began with MacDonald and went through Morris, Dunsany, Tolkien, and Lewis. With his passing, that tradition has effectively come to an end. It's remarkable that he lived such a long life and was active up til its close.
