How does one make it as a writer?

You can't make it if you are a white heterosexual male. We are oppressed. That's the reason for why I'm not published

No really, that's it. That's the key. The snide answer is *get good*
You get good by practice. Have talent, it will be easier for you. Don't have talent, you may never "make it"
Live with it. Enjoy.

I meant more in regards to supporting yourself financially while writing your works, and how to go about getting your book published.

Nothing is as easy as it seems, my friend.

get a job

send a letter to a publishing agency of your choice, along with an excerpt. or, send it directly to a publisher. or, try to self-publish online. i used to get short stories published in a few different journals, but that was in the 80's and i don't think anyone read them. these days, though, if you can get an audience you can do the whole process of publishing yourself.

You have to be really good and perseverant, or really fucking lucky / have good connections, regardless of if you're good or not.
