A few sources told me to read The Stranger. I liked it but I don't understand what's supposed to be so amazing about it. Can anyone tell me why It's so highly recommended? Also is there a better Camus book I should read?

You clearly aren't the target audience for the book then.

What are you on about I said I liked it. You've got nothing to say about why it's praised so much?

>>8642466
Also it was a lot like Nausea and I preferred that.

You would know why it is praised so highly if you were the target audience for the book.

I'm reading it right now (20 pages left).

How the hell is this fucking book a masterpiece of existential lit?

I haven't come across anything profound, and the book reads like something a high school student wrote. It fucking sucks.

>Guy's mom dies. Guy doesn't feel sad.
>Guy meets up with his ladyfriend.
>Guy goes to the beach.
>Guy kills sandnigger.
>Goes to jail.

Big fucking whoop.

It's absurdism not existentialism. So there's your first issue.

Because he's completely detached from the emotions and realities of other people. He exists totally on his own and only by becoming a murderer does he fulfill any social role at all (being executed in front of a crowd)

Have you ever considered thinking about something, or do you need themes to be given to you with a spoon.

I had the same problem. Apparently the book is supposed to be eye-opening because it gives you the unique insight of a diseased mind, and forces you to see the world in a different way. Personally, I could relate to the protagonist to a greater extent than I would like to admit, so the first time I read it, I legit just thought that it was supposed to an ordinary novel. I liked it better than most novels I've read, but only because I can't relate to the protagonists in most novels. So, in other words, the book's supposed to be weird, if you're already in any way neurodivergent you probably won't even realise that.

Completely wrong. If you'd outgrown your bullshit you'd have at least seen the humor in it. Try again later.

>> No.8642790

So this thread and some reviews I read that gave it either 1 or 5 stars suggest that most people either love or hate this book without much reason or middle ground. I thought it was okay and the end with the priest was really good. Still Nausea was way better.

What Anons are trying to say when they say "You would understand it if you were the target audience" is that the people who rate this book so highly live as the main character lives and see what the main character sees and has relationships as the main character does so it becomes something they relate with.

You say that but most of lit even upon reading it don't seem to understand.

I really don't get it. It's such a simple, straightforward novel, with a pretty clear message that a sizeable amount of lit brutalises with their shitty interpretations and misunderstandings.

I'm reading your post right now (halfway through).

How the hell is this fucking post meant to be a critique of anything?

I haven't come across anything profound, and the post reads like something a high school student wrote. It fucking sucks.

>Critiquing a book's message without having finished it
>Missing the whole point
>Lacking the critical thinking schools to understand a book a teenager should be able to

Big fucking whoop.

I hate it when people dismiss this book for "simplicity" and I think it's mainly because of it's straightforward prose and plot. More than simple I woukd classify it as concentrated and concrete.

I've read all three and I understood the other two. The Stranger jsut sucked.

The final 4-5 pages summarised his entire message, which was weak as fuck.

The rest of the book was like reading a laundry list of things Mersault did. I went to the beach today. We went for a swim. Then we sat down on the beach. After that we walked back up the stairs to the house were I had a few smokes.

It sucked.

Book is overblown. Much like the jury and the crowd finding meaning behind the minutia of French dude's life, three generations of literary critics have founding meaning in The Stranger where there is none.
