That argument can be applied to any anime made

You guys aren't even trying. It's time for you to graduate.

In no specific order...

Monster - Urusawa Naoki
Gyo, Uzumaki, Tomie - Itou Junji
Vagabond - Inoue Takehiko
Sangokushi - Yokoyama Mitsuteru
Buddha, Hi no Tori - Osamu Tezuka

FLCL is great, but, "the most /lit/?" Hell no.

There can't even be any debate. Legend of Galactic Heroes is by far the most /lit/ anime. 19th-century tier.

If the artist is into it it's cool. But putting so much time into turning some guys stupid gag comic book into a tv show which will probably make virtually 0 use of the medium change must be pretty demoralizing.

LOTGH

MONSTER

PunPun

Lain

Ghost in the shell

Baccano

Those are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Anime has its high points for sure, but without a doubt manga is the superior weeb /lit/ platform. I vote for Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, with honorable mentions to Freesia and Kokou no Hito.

That's what I meant. There are great works to be found in anime, but some manga reach heights and depths that are extremely rarely seen in anime, that I honestly think some of them are so great they more than measure up to great literature.

Everyone knows that Manga peaked with Devilman. Hell, human achievement peaked with Devilman. All accomplishments from Devilman onwards are just competing for second place.

I will never understand why people like Urasawa so much, it's like he writes exclusively for the plot, there's no element of humanity or intimacy in his works.

That may be its "theme", but it lacks nuance and in-depth understanding. To make a reader know of something is one thing, to make him comprehend it and feel it is another. For myself, I would much a rather read something that tackles a much simpler subject but with soulful writing and imagery than a logical chain of events and plot twists connected by a theme for theme's sake.
That is not to say I hate Urasawa's work, personally I think he's mastered the art of classical writing, I'm sure he can whip up a three act story about whatever theme he gets dished with semi-interesting characters that have that certain realistic scent that reels people in his work, but for my taste I would take a Punpun over a Monster every day.
