I remember reading a short story about a man and a woman at a restaurant. It's the man's birthday, and the woman surprises him by ordering a large cake and having the wait staff sing to him. After the waiters leave, the man starts whispering cruelties in the woman's ear, presumably about how the celebration is excessive, and she starts weeping. Also, she's wearing a fancy hat.

Mediocre reading of that. I suppose it's surface level, but there's a lot more you can take into account regarding the perspective of the narrator, what we do and don't know, whether the woman is actually crying since she's under the big brim of her hat and the narrator can't actually see her, etc...

Here it is, though. I googled "The Birthday Cake short story" and it was the first result.
