I'm especially interested in the Peredvizjniki and Repin in special, but any general introductions and theory about Realism would be appreciated.

Bonus points for good stuff about French and Belgian Realism.

Btw: does anyone know of an actual decent book that explains/compares the theories of romanticism, realism, impressionism and expressionism? Or at least gives me an introduction to the thinking behind them?

ah, i didnt read ur op post too well, but you can switch 'the shock of the new' (which deals with modern art) for 'civilisation' (which deals with western art in general), the latter gives you a better scope to your concerns

really just any book on 19th century art will do since all the styles and movements you mentioned are tied up in the historical century as a whole rather than as isolated theories
