No it's not. The apostrophe is a visual representation of how we pronounce the word. We make a "c" sound then say the word "mon".

Sorry but you're wrong. Its formal contracted syntax was most common throughout the 19th century. It wasn't until the Jazz Age and advent of miscegenation that we saw it and grammar in general collapse into archaism.
