>tfw I snapped and actually got a little upset when one of my friends' friends started rattling off a long-winded "too long, boring unnecessary tangents, harder to read than watching paint dry" speech about Moby Dick
>2 people in the room at the time started laughing when I angrily told him to take it back and said it was one of the greatest books I've ever read
>"that was funny, anon"

why is it popular to hate this book

People read it at a young age and don't get it. Also the attention span of a goldfish and reading for plot are pretty common among people.

I don't hate moby dick, I think it's a fine book which just happens to be very draining to read.

Reading it for the first time... it's actually very entertaining and fairly easy read.

Child's play compared to Joyce or Faulkner (at least for me).

...oh yes, and it's beautifully written.

It will seem like that for a little while, but then it will start to get more difficult to read. I know this, because lately the book has taken me a lot longer to read than it did when I first started reading it.
