I know reading will obviously help and I'm doing it already but would be better if I get some recommendations in genres/writers and any other tips/guides/whatever. Feel free to say anything you think might work.

Beats me man; non-fiction is usually the realm of people who do things other than sit in their rooms trying to string two words together all day.

As a result the actual quality of writing is usually utilitarian and nothing else; unless you're going back to a time before pompous conceptions of "proper academic tone" banished the metaphor and the simile and all the other really expressive nuances of language to the toy cupboard.

It is pretentious to discard fiction; your very life is a carefully constructed fiction.
