What the fuck else am I supposed to do? I read a lot of foreign literature, I'm not going to learn 5 different languages so I can read my books with slightly different prose.

Seidensticker did great translations of Japanese literature. I have basic-intermediate knowledge of written Japanese and have done volunteer work as an editor of translated Japanese text, and seeing how there are a dozen ways to render a single Japanese sentence into English, I realised how difficult it is. It's not only a matter of choosing vocabulary, but also tone and word order and sentence length. All a Japanese sentence needs to be grammatically correct is a verb at the end. Seidensticker translated in such a way that it's easy to forget you are reading a translation.

It's a meme on here to hate them, but Pevear and Volokhonsky have good translations of Russian lit. Their Gogol is a little laing, but their Dosto and Tolstoy (at least War & Peace) are good.
