I've been playing a lot of video games lately. I only had a Wii last generation so the PS4 is a brand new experience for me. I'm trying to play games that will convince me that video games are great art. I'm playing The Last of Us and this is the game that really did it for me. Video games can be art. I just finished the part where Joel dies. I didn't see it coming. I guess I play as Ellie now. Anyway, after I beat this game I'll get back to reading more.

Most acclaimed CRPGs are as good as the best fantasy novels and some (Planescape Torment) are better than most fantasy novels
There's no shame in playing System Shock 2 or Deus Ex for a few hours instead of reading no matter how neckbeardish it sounds

I read half of American gods and then I got distracted last summer and I tried again recently and same thing happened

I have the opposite problem. I'm losing most of my friends because I can't enjoy video games anymore. Every time someone forces me to play some with them, all I can think about is how I'm wasting my time when I could be reading and can never just get into them like I could before. Maybe its ultimately for the best, but maybe its better to have friends and waste time than to be a well-read antisocial loser.

Bought a PS4 last december, played it constantly for a few months and now I barely touch it at this point, might try to sell it eventually.
Reading is ultimately more gratifying imo, even if videogames are more immediately enjoyable.

I think I'm going to go play Battlefront or something now, fuck you for reminding me vidya exists.

Sometimes it is not bad to take a break from reading and do something else. I've also played a lot of video games over the past few weeks. Been working on my MA thesis so I've been reading and writing all day. At the end of the day, I sometimes just want to relax and play games. But lately, I started craving for a good book again.

It was actually pretty decent until the end. The atmosphere in the book was a really dreary and depressing one. It follows elves who've lost everything, following Illidan to the Black Temple in order to learn from it.

The trials they go through to become Demon Hunters are actually really horrific. A lot of them simply go insane and start rambling, and some even sneak out while others are sleeping, to slit throats. The main character, Vandel, gets a bunch of tattoos and then they become painful for him, so he starts taking a scalpel and slicing the flesh that has the tattoos right off him, and almost bleeds out and dies.

Illidan does a lot of heinous, dark shit but he is extremely effective. He uses the souls of about a couple hundred soldiers (who were Outland citizens cobbled together by Maiev) to power a gate into a demon world, so he can exterminate it.

And the the end is basically Blizzard intervening and making the author write about an encounter with an "Elder Naaru" and Illidan where the naaru explains that Illidan is the golden destiny child who is fated to end the Burning Legion and shows him a vision of him being a Paladin or some shit. It was fucking awful.

Anyway I'm pretty satisfied with the amount of time I spend reading (2 or 3 novels / month in addition to poetry and journalism). I could always increase that, but I work and have other hobbies I need to balance alongside lit. I play video games pretty intermittently so that never cuts into my reading time.

I had a thought. What if recommended reading books would be recreated as visual novels? The sight and sound definitely draws more attention and emotion than just plain text does. It could be used to teach children to handle longer texts. To not cripple imagination completely the visual style could omit details, forcing the imagination to fill in the gaps.
These would be aimed at those who suck at reading or has problems focusing, so reading pace shouldn't be a huge issue.

There is much below the surface. Like a full half of the game. There's just as many hidden cubes that must be found by deciphering and riddle solving after all the platforming ones are done. There's some good articles about the community that developed to solve the game. Crazy stuff like finding the images hidden in the soundtrack.
Course all that would mean nothing if it wasn't good. But it's very good. Very very good.
