History is the study of documents. Nothing more. You go to the archive in Germany that escaped the bombings. The SS burned a lot of the documents you were looking for, but, being German, they made triplicate copies of everything. You find an SS Untersturmfuhrer's report to his superior about the conclusion of a successful Aktion in a village north of Kiev. He summarizes the shooting of fifty Jews and communists and a recommendation that Scharfuhrer Eckart be sent to kat zet guard duty, because he's drunk all the time and unreliable.

You repeat this process a bunch of times and there you go, six gorrilion.

Read Evan's Third Reich at War and Eichmann in Jerusalem. The paper trail was so massive it was hard to believe, and actually sometimes provided exculpatory evidence in that "mercy" was given when it didnt fit the bureaucratic mold.

Shirer's books is totally reliant on said archive
