This one. Seriously, I'm french, and I while I am sure that the story can be faithfully transcribed, I am afraid that what makes this author who he is - use of the vernacular, rambling and ranting, way to clash the literary establishment - will be lost in translation. That being said, there is not much use for french nowadays... except for reading this author and some others - camus, malraux, sartre - but I digress...

The Ralph Manheim translation from the 1980's. The early translation from the 30's was written in a time when English-speaking countries were prude. Cursing in a book was forbidden, talking about sex frankly was forbidden. The translation wasn't very Celine-like at all.

The Manheim translation is much more faithful and authentic to Celine's own words, style, and content.

You can tell you have the Mannheim version because it's an enjoyable read. I originally read Death with his translation. Just for kicks, I went and found the older translation. The prose was very tight and formulated (there was almost no slang and many references to bodily fluids were missing; the entire vomit scene on the ship with his parents? Yeah, barely even covered a page), it was all very reserved and the tone of the dialogue came out sounding very British in language... pic related.
