/lit/ inspiration thread. This is a thread for authors looking for inspiration. Just come talk about interesting ideas, interesting scenery, interesting plots, and if you feel like it, share it so maybe some other anon will help turn whatever you came up with into something even better. Let's just have fun with it. Please keep the shitposting to a minimum.

I feel like I should get the ball rolling, but I have to warn you it's pretty shit.

Prompt idea: A man starts losing a limb each day for unknown reasons and after consulting with a doctor finds out that whatever was happening was irreversible. He lives out the rest of his days the best he can while waking up with less and less of himself than he began with.

I'm writing a novel right about arctic explores at the turn of the century and this image inspires me a lot. I like the idea of severe-looking white men bundled up in furs in the middle of the abyss, which in this case is just a deep black canvas background but metaphorically is the arctic itself

Glad you're interested

I'm trying to let go of plot and theme and let the prose be the backbone– very much after John Hawkes– but i'll briefly run down what happens.

The narrator is a sadomasochistic doctor on board a ship in the very early 20th century that's sailing to be the first ever to reach the northern pole of inaccessibility. His mother had munchausen syndrome by proxy and killed his brother and his sister, whom he was sexually obsessed with. As a student in Italy, he murders a small number of people. Eventually he ends up on this ship and essentially loses his mind leading to him performing unnecessary medical procedures on crew members that mutilate or kill them. The sink ships and all the escapees die in the ice, though I'm not sure how that happens or yet, nor if I even want to write about how it happens.

I'm at 20,000 words and want it to be about double that length, I plan to finish it before next summer and workshop it with a supervisor in an independent study at uni.

I want to do a cosmic horror set on a generation ship.
Basically a dude finds an egg which ends being a vessel for cosmic beings to control him/his peers
Pretty run of the mill cosmic horror (not derleth style, Lovecraft) that I'm doing to see if I can string together a cohesive narrative with good prose/dialogue

I saw something funny take place on a street the other day. I chuckled inwardly and thought "I should write this down, this is good material." But I didn't and now I forgot what happened.

It's awful, incoherent, pseudo-philosophical dreck, but inspiration can come from anywhere. If you're an anime fan, it's worth watching as an example of how terrible '80s OVAs can get.

Why is she isolated in the first place? Is she isolated by choice or not? Does she want to leave? Two films that come to mind that deal with similar ideas are The Hole (1999) and Jeanne Dielman (1975). Very different films with very different messages but both about isolated women

Reminds me of The Collector by John Fowles. An artistic but snobby girl is kidnapped by a callous but placid man. To improve her situation somewhat she demands books and paintings etc, things he sees no value in.

I wonder sometimes whether autism is in part a consequence of children being immersed for extended periods of time in virtual or "alternative" world like the one in your pic, often longer than the time they spend in the Real World [TM]. OCD and a fascination with symmetry and straight lines etc is often associated with the autistic condition, and I can't help but think my own appreciation for these things is somehow connected to all those days I spent on my Gameboy and Playstation as a kid. That pic is very cozy to me, reminds me of that feeling you get when you're around a small group of strangers but you're suddenly brought closer together by extreme weather.

I'm trying to write a poem using a four dimensional creature to help describe something close to schizophrenia, but I have a hard time painting the imagery. How would you describe this?
Imagine this painting but the planes are undulating.

I was considerIng writing a sci fi dark comedy short story about a worthless young man who gets sent out on a mission as an assistant with earths mightiest space hero commander to go deep into enemy territory and deliver a fatal blow to their HQ.

The gist is this. The guy is there basically to record the hero being awesome. The night of the secret attack, the assistant fumbles and drops the Heros rifle and blows the Heros head clean off. Ashamed and embarrassed about what he's done, he calls in a hasty artillery strike on them to get rid of the evidence while he escapes. The assistant runs for his life as the ordnance comes in and unknowingly kills the enemy commander and ending the war. The rest of the story is him speaking to the press and making shit up about the Heros final moments and being brave in the face of death. He gets promoted and is declared a hero himself.Unable to live with the grief and the gravity of his lie, he hangs himself.

You should make him more Machiavellian and have him be totally cool about what he did, until the hero's son or someone finds out and kills him. Make it like a 1,000 pages long and you've got a bestseller.
