I have yet to read modern fantasy that wasn't written by an established author that wasn't trash or extremely mediocre at best.
Science fiction unlike fantasy had decent titles. Not sure what makes fantasy worse in comparison, or rather more attractive to hordes of nerds and feminists.

Liberalism originally comes as a reaction in philosophy to scholasticism which is now more or less the only strong basis for a conservative outlook with Locke and in politics with the French Revolution which is also a revolt against conservative values.

Liberalism (At least, modern American definition) is just wanting social and political change.

I'm trying to remember a couple of science fiction books. One of them was about how space colonization is so expensive the only way to improve on your investment is to send mercs to pillage your colonies. Part of the future world was that food came from factories and eating natural food was considered disgusting. I think the word Dragon was in the title.

The other one was about a human race linked by wormholes that's fighting this hivemind race that calls itself Prime. The humans are all immortal, and there's a subplot where this dreadlocks guy is walking on fairy paths through a bunch of different planets.

A rising evil bent on destroying them all.

>MATT HOLLIS is the current wielder of the holy weapon, Dämoren. With it, he stalks and destroys demons.

>A secret society called the VALDUCANS has taken an interest in Matt’s activities. They see him as a reckless rogue—little more than a ‘cowboy’ corrupted by a monster—and a potential threat to their ancient order.

>As knights and their sentient weapons begin dying, Matt teams up with other hunters of his kind such as LUIZA, a woman with a conquistador blade; ALLAN, an Englishman with an Egyptian khopesh; MALCOLM, a voodoo priest with a sanctified machete; and TAKAIRA, a naginata-swinging Samurai.

>As the hunters become the hunted, they must learn to trust one another before a powerful demonic entity thrusts the world into a terrible and ageless darkness.

It's mostly clear simple morals and other appropiate things for a little girl show.

If you're in for the fighting then Heartcatch is probably your best bet.
Go Princess also had a fair amount of good quality fights.
Yes 5 also had a good amount of fisticuffs, but since it's a 50 episode children show don't expect quality to be consistent.
Splash Star is best if you want something the closest to DBZ, but it's extremely formualic

I really enjoyed this Robert Silverberg book from 1972. If you want something modern, character driven, and dealing with the occult/forbidden knowledge, this will do.

One particular thread runs through it; rationality and the sciences have rendered religion and mysticism into meaningless materialism, which man finds unsatisfying. There's quite a bit of gay sex, too.

It's really no aspect in particular, but just drawing from that tradition and pool of ideas in general. For example "daylight Lovecraftianism" in near future settings where main characters fight surreal monsters while struggling with existential angst is pretty common in anime media, i. e. FFVII, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Madoka Magica, Kara no Kyoukai, Xenogears etc. I'm definitely doing some "daylight Lovecraftianism", for example.

Well, that was just one example of anime-like stuff. But anyway, they don't necessarily have a normal life in what I term "daylight Lovecraftianism". It's just that it's sort of Lovecraftian themes, in that for example you're worrying about the meaning of life and that there are surreal space monsters, like Jenova in FFVII and the witches in Madoka Magica. Instead of it usually being one person alone challenging this though, carrying an oil lantern through the cobblestoned streets of some abandoned town, in "daylight Lovecraftianism" the settings are usually very colorful and varied instead, and you typically have friends to share your horrors with. That's really the sole thing that makes me call it "daylight". Also it's usually more optimistic in that more often than not the characters actually manage to beat the alien monsters, and also solve their philosophical angst, usually relying on existentialist philosophy. For example at the end of Xenogears the main characters free themselves from their bizarre God so they can create their own meaning.

I'll be very surprised and happy if you can think of something similar Western. I doubt you can though. It seems to me this basically started with Neon Genesis Evangelion, and everyone who has done anything similar since is just aping that. The closest I've come is Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End which I also know made quite an impact on the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion when he was a child. I don't think it's quite what I'm talking about though. Clarke is just exploring closely the idea that aliens would be completely incomprehensible if we actually encountered them rather than writing genuine semi-optimistic Lovecraftian horror in a science-fiction setting.

Well, in the first paragraph I'm generally trying to explain why I call it "daylight", in the second paragraph I'm discussing Childhood's End in particular when I say that it doesn't seem like a genuine semi-optimistic Lovecraftian horror in a science-fiction setting, which is by no means intended to be a complete definition of what I'm talking about. I think if you compare some of the titles I've mentioned, there are a lot of things they have in common. Of course not all examples are as pure. Many things I would call "daylight Lovecraftianism" tend to have a science-fiction setting and feminine, surreal monsters. In Kara no Kyoukai the monsters are not very surreal (though they are feminine and spooky) and it's a paranormal detective story, but I would still bunch it with those other titles, because similarly to FFVII, etc. it's full of (mostly superfluous) references to philosophy, psychology, etc. and the main character is struggling with a split personality.

tl;dr: I'm autistically seeing patterns that don't exist or blowing out of proportion the fact that a couple of anime media have ripped off Neon Genesis Evangelion in varying degrees.

It still leaves my point standing though, I believe, which is that a lot of nerds in their 20s, 30s, 40s should have played stuff like Final Fantasy VII and watched Neon Genesis Evangelion. Where are the angsty protagonists, the angelical, surreal monsters? Or really any kind of influence from anime media? I played fucking Legend of Zelda before I knew Tolkien.

Anyway when you said anime-influenced I was thinking of characters developed closely from archetypes, genre blindness, a tendency to replace some or all potential characters with young maidens, tendency to focus on the buildup over the climax, etc. but you probably aren't thinking Girls und Panzer when you think of anime.

The characters being metaphorically brightly-colored with bold lines, and their complexity rising from that, that's what I really think of when I think of anime influences.
