Thank you.

I was on a King binge for a while there. Now I'm reading Dostoevsky and other random Russian lit to spice things up.

But I'm going to try to start and finish The Stand during my holiday in Japan. Not my summer holiday either, my winter one. Fuck yeah, opposite seasons to the northern hemisphere.

I was going to say these but to be honest they're more of a stiff drink sort of thing.

Crappy fantasy novels usually :/ (as opposed to good ones? lmao)

>> No.796605

First Blood. Hell, it's my favortie book period. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy classic, thought-provoking works as much as the next guy, but reading about a disgruntled Vietnam War veteran start a one-man war against a jealous, irritated, and tired Korean War veteran and the police force is simply too thrilling for me to give it a lesser status.

Unless you have a hankering for endless group orgies and nonstop gay sex, I'd advise you against that one

Bernard Cornwell's stuff. Trashy action adventure novels that are so much better than sword and sorcery crap.

what do you mean by "popcorn/fast food"

i don't eat either of those so explain please

>> No.796700

I think he means entertaining but light novels: one's that aren't particularly well-written or intelligent, but are enjoyable all the same.

Well, if you're still confused, here's another way of explaining it:

Commercial novels. The sort of thing you see for sale at the airport.

>> No.796724

>>796710

Really? Entertaining, but I wouldn't say well-written. It's pretty much one giant flashback, about a load of kids I don't give shit about. Plus the ending kinda killed it.

the build up and back story is beautifully done.. not many authors can write a book that long and keep it entertaining and enthralling

>> No.796743

i suppose literature needs to have its own pretentious head up its ass to be considered 'real' literature

Yeah, but not many authors can throw in a pointless pre-teen gangbang in a sewer, a space turtle, and turn their lead villain into a giant spider.

I suppose you could say literature falls into two sects: one that tries to make some kind of point, and another that just tries to entertain you.

>> No.796783

OP here.

I wouldn't label 'It' was a classic, or anything like that. But I am not going to argue that it was horribly written, regardless of your opinion, it is a good book. It just happens to fall under the 'fastfood' criteria. That doesn't necessitate it being bad.

>> No.796791

>>796783

Pretty much this. Most of King's books are badly written and have stupid plots, but they're entertaining.

It runs over 1000 pages in small print.

It's hardly a dime novel.

Calling something "fast food" literature implies it must be brief. I won't even argue for the subtext (which is interesting).
