How can a Romantic cope with modern life? What is the best modern occupation/life for someone with the strongest Romantic views of the world?

Any other Romantics report ITT and discuss life

>> No.7950137

Let's start with some examples from you of a Romantic occupation/life. Then we'll work from there.

One with adventure, one with feelings, one that provokes movement of the soul. Not for money or power but for the self.

All I want to do it buy a used up sailboat, fix it up and spend my days as a travelling writer doing jobs here and there to pay costs while inbetween getting high and blasting Beethoven while reading Mishima in the middle of the Pacific (which I have already started by immersing myself in the sailing world already, costs would actually be feasible)

I do not give a shit about politics and if anything try to be more centered but if I had to pick one based at least on my actions it'd probably be right.

I've worked hard manual labour jobs since I got kicked out of uni. I've broken rocks on railways while abseiling down cliffs and climbed oil rigs in the Danish sea at night. My advice is to start working a really rough job that exhausts and scares you like on a Scottish creeling boat. It works best if your work mates hate you. This will either break your spirit or rise you up. You then take that renewed spirit and use to buy that boat and fix it or get another better paid job. You keep moving. You keep changing. You keep learning skills. Like chainsaw work. In a few years you will have toughened significantly and have a new bunch of skills. You wont take as much shit from your work mates. You will be able to do new tasks. You will reapply yourself to life and find the romance in your work.

Brother I will remember your words and will honestly take your advice. That's a large part of why I want go get into sailing too, before I actually chill in my boat and cruise around I want to learn from scratch on a boat that is my own and teach myself as I go on, even though I am taking sailing classes and will continue so for the equivalency of 200~ hours, I do want to go on into sailing for a living at first, doing jobs of transporting sailboats or crewing on large ships (realistically probably wont be able to crew in a sailboat so just anything on sea), and then really want to get into ocean racing, which is the single last remaining activity in the modern world that is like sailing in the Romantic times or just from any old sailing world.

I do plan on going your advice of encountering great hardship at first to build the soul and mind, but plan to do all of that on my sea life.

fellow romantic reporting in. i'm a curator, i wear vintage clothes and sit with old artifacts all day. on my day off i wander the local gardens and trails with my favorite books, sometimes i also embroider and paint when the weather is nice.

honestly, everyone thinks my life is hideously boring. but i love what i do and i am free to travel to all sorts of places, what more can anyone ask for?

what do you do, OP? how are you embracing your romantic ideals?

Well I'm >>7950538 and >>7950162 so you can get a feel that I'm definirely the sea-faring Romantic

But your lifestyle also seems.perfect. Add a comfy house with a nice garden and a couple of cats and its near perfect.

ahh, that sounds marvelous! you'll see so many beautiful sights and have many tales to share. the sea is such a peculiar thing, all the frightful terrors masked by the calm blue azure. such an alluring mistress is difficult to resist.

>Add a comfy house with a nice garden and a couple of cats
i have a cat actually, she accompanies me on my excursions! still looking for the right house (cottage) though, the housing market is terrible so it will likely be some time.

How do you deal with lack of communication with other people, of human companionship? I'm asking because your lifestyle sounds very alluring (and, while very different, so does OP's) yet I'm not sure I could cope with the above, and how.

curator anon here, in the end i don't think such a lifestyle has to be a reclusive one fortunately. most of these activities would do very well with a partner or a small group of friends. i'm a fairly isolated person so it doesn't bother me to be alone for long periods of time, though ironically people seem more keen on talking to me when i'm alone for some reason.

are you a social person? i can see how such a quiet life might not ideal for a highly extroverted person.

What about becoming an artisan in a small town?

Though you have a better shot at plumber, electrician, or carpenter than sushi chef, swordsmith, etc. In the end you can pretend your Jesus while building wooden stuff.

It's a matter of perspective really. I think an important element is how you interact with people. Do you lift people up? Do you say beautiful and true thigs that weaves insight around you? Do other people smile when you come in the door and weep when you leave?

A romantic is a beacon of hope, for a more pure life. Showing others this life is key.

It's not actually hard to lang a gig as crew. You just have to look up the spots with lots of traffic, find the right season, and go to the marinas and ask around. Here in Europe, the easiest spot is the Canary Islands in November, but there's many other places. Catching a ride on a boat on the Panama Canal is also super easy. Lots of boats crossing the Pacific, that's like a 30-day sail, they all want an extra set of hands on board. Just go out there and do it.

So tell me about your plans, I'm curious. Also, if you plan on buying a boat, you can find them for $5k on craigslist or other places. Lots of boat owners hit a rough patch and are desperate to sell, they will get rid of their boat for no money at all. Look for those opportunities.

this is exactly what happens. People in a tight economical situation get fed up with boat maintenance and they just give it away for peanuts. Keep your eyes open.
